Ok, so I have this grandmother. 80-something, nice lady, head screwede on right, all that. But I don't really know her too well. She lives far off and usually spend holidays with my uncle's family. But now she's decided to come here this christmas instead. And although that's great, it put another person on my present shopping list.

What's the generic non-offensive always appriciated gift to an old family matriarch?

Maybe a nice tea gift set or something like that. I got my grandma a hot cocoa pot and mug set with gourmet cocoa.

Liar,

Maybe talk to other members of your family who know her better and could tell you if she has any particualr interests.

hmmm...something for an 80 year old woman?

How about a leather thong in a size small....and if that doesn't fit her, well there is a 40 year old woman in the State who might like it... :D

Actually, since she isn't around with you guys that much, how about something to remember all you by? Like a family picture? Perhaps with a beautiful poem written by you?

Something personal like that, might be just right thing ~ sentiments are sometimes most appreciated and loved.

I think if someone did that for me, wrote a poem specifically for me and had a photo to go with it would be incredible!!!!

Good luck!!!

Candles. We have an almost identical situation going on this year, with his grandmother. We're not sure if she's diabetic or not (so sweets were out), we didn't know what she liked or how she decorated her home or anything, so we decided some nice candles were a generic gift that anyone could appreciate.

Thanks, peeps. Chocolate is out. Would kill her on the spot, I'm afraid. :D

And presents are just for fun. Spending a good christmas eve together is the real sentiment. Gonna cruise the stores tomorrow. I think I'll stumble onto something.

I would suggest that you cruise the 'Net today. You can cover a lot more ground in the 'Net than fighting the crowds Christmas shopping.

An older friend of mine once told me to only buy people in her age range gifts that can be used completely up, because physical possessions just clutter up the place and, in her words, are going to be inherited in the not-too-distant future. She recommended fancy foods, fancy teas or coffees and gift certificates for goods or services that she can use on herself.

Just some thoughts...

Handkerchiefs, soft scented bubble bath, candles, a hot water bottle, a cardigan/jumper/sweater, pot pourri ( or however it's spelt), bed socks, nightdress, night gown, Nice biscuits (diabetic ones if she's diabetic), towels (tea towels or hand towels....thats all I can think of right now, hope they give you some ideas :)
