Hi everyone!

Happy Easter!

My computer has been having issues. If any of you have worked through this or have ideas... I'd appreciate it your advice.

It's a WinXp sys.

It's running slower than normal.

It will lock up frequently, usually when using Yahoo Messenger and opening a menu (like emoticons).

The other day, even the fold out menus on the start button and quicklaunch bar would stop working after a while, but be fine when restarted.

I ran spydoctor and NortonAV.

Any thoughts?

Thank you soo much!

It may be worth running a few other anti-spyware programmes, one programme can miss some spyware that another may pick up. I use Adaware and the Microsoft anti-spyware beta, you can get Adaware off www.downloads.com (or is it download.com?) not sure about the MS one, certainly of the MS website.

If you have the full Norton Suite, I'd suggest purging your temporary internet files (Internet Options-> delete files button) and then running Norton DiskDoctor and Norton Speedisk.

If the problem persists, Norton's WinDoctor will help you to "tune up" your system by analyzing and correcting problms with duplicate programs being loaded, things not loading in the best sequence, etc.

Norton also has some other utilities for checking the hardware for problems and software conflicts.

However, the Norton utility that runs in the bcground nd continuously monitors your system for problems IS a problem -- it's a memory and resource hog that can cause symptoms like you're experiencing all by itself.

1st : how old is the computer?

2nd: how much memory do you have on the computer

3rd: what size is you harddrive

4th: I see you have Norton.. Do you have the latest updates

5th: Agree with other user that says run AdAware. I had freeze up issues before and AdAware cleaned them out. You should run AdAware 3 times and still run spydoctor. I have read in pc mags that you should have more then 1 of those programs.. The reason why I said run AdAware more then once is because it should clean it the first time (it might run for over an hour) but you might see some lingering ads still lurking on your computer. That is why you need to run it more then once..

6th: When was the last time you ran a defrag?

Lets start with the 6 listed above and we will go from there.

I do not check my LIT threads that often so if you want a fast response you need to email or pm me.

Good Luck!
