I have been gardening this morning. I was distracted.
I was trying to empty a plant trough for replanting when I noticed two ladybirds making more ladybirds. I stopped to watch.
The male was hanging on as hard as he could while his partner was running around the edge of the plant trough. Every time she slowed to a trot or a walk he thrust frantically. After a few seconds she resumed running and he had to stop and just hang on.
Whenever she met an obstruction he thrust harder and faster then hung on as she negotiated the block. Even when they were both upside down on a grass stem he would thrust upwards shaking the stem.
The plant trough is about 18 inches by 6 inches. While I watched they circled the edge five times. Eventually she fell inside the trough onto the earth. He was still hanging on. When she landed he banged away for about thirty seconds before spreading his wings and flying off.
She shook herself and flew off to meet him again. They resumed their encounter on my lawn. She couldn't run as fast through the grass stems. This time the coupling lasted just a few minutes before they parted. They crawled away slowly - side by side.
Do you know of any other creature that attempts intercourse at a fast run?
