A TOAST: Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon 1900-2002

or, the Duchess of York, Queen Elizabeth 1937-1952, The Queen Mum - 1953 -2002...

She, who was "glad" that "we've (Buck House) been bombed, now I can look the EastEnders in the face"

Gracious, gutsy - Hitler called her "The most dangerous woman in Europe", she is gone from this mortal existence - at a Century Plus One.

What a gal! She epitomized class, humility and the "Common Touch" - forced by her limp-wimp brother-in-law to be Queen, she stood firmly BESIDE, not behind, her beloved "Bertie", willing him success in overcoming his shyness & speech impediment. Through her support, he became arguably one of Great Britain's best, and best-loved monarchs.

During WWII, she would NOT leave London - especially at the height of the "Blitz" - (see comment above!)

Her last job, I believe she felt, was to mother the younger, wayward daughter, margaret Rose - and that job finished with Princess Margaret's recent death - she could relax, and let go...

The Queen is Dead, God Save the Queen.

If anyone deserves more than one thread commemorating their life, it's the Queen mum.

*raising glass in her honor*

The Queen is Dead, God Save the Queen.

Death is a horizon.

Nicely written, Jimi.

Thank you, Sir Knight. :)

And Cryssie, thank you for your "bump" and toast to the queen Mum. :rose:

She struck me as a gracious lady with a great sense of humor! You could see that knowing twinkle that indicated she knew something the others around her didn't.
It is a sorrow when the world loses such a bright soul. To be denied one more second of their wisdom through experience is a loss to all.
Rest in Eternal Peace.

I bow my head for a moment in respect, for one of the great ones of the world has passed.

Shamelessly *BUMPING*

Peepee said "who cares" - Lots!

Well, it seems that right at this moment, 1343 hrs BST, there are literally thousands of people preparing to file past the Queen Mum's bier in Westminster Hall.

On our CTV network, the footage showed the line-up from the Hall, across Westminster Bridge along the South Bank (about a Km.) of the Thames to Lambeth Bridge... and more to come, I'm sure, as people leave work this sunny afternoon in London.

The Queen appeared quite surprised at the loud, but disciplined applause, as she left her Mum's side in the Hall, and drove back to Buck House... The pavements(sidewalks) were PACKED!

The Brits, and ourselves, and Kiwis and Aussies are ALL sending (or have sent) contingents to pass on parade - both today and on Tuesday - so she will be sent off to Windsor, and her beloved "Bertie" in the style that she exemplified! :)

Her favourite international leaders were Ian SMith of Rhodesia and a succcession of apartheid leaders in South Africa.

She was an alcoholic

She had 4 spare castles to go to unlike the Eastenders who were made homeless in their 100s.

She campaigned vigorously to disqualify Lord Nicholas WIndsor, the Earl of St Andrews and Prince Michael from the thrown for becoming or marrying Catholics.

Good riddance to the gin-sodden patronising racist that she was !

Don't be so damned ignorant.

She may have had 4 castles to go to and in fact they wanted her and her children (future QE2) to leave the country altogether. But she didn't. She stayed right in the middle of the bombing and blitzing. I call that courage and heart.

She was an alcoholic? She liked her gin, that's for sure, no one ever denied that, let alone her. Your point?

And since she was in essence, an envoy for Britain, political associations do not make someone a racist.

God Bless The Queen for always remaining a lady with class no matter what life threw at her, right til then end.

..ding --dong ...the queen is dead.
..saw her daughter once in 59
..the fullest of lives for her
,,bully,bully

Well, She's on her way...

her body is leaving London, her adopted city, for the last time.

Imperfect as she may have been , she tried her best, often at great personal cost, to embody the best of the ideals she held dear.

The RAF aircraft overhead, and the unprecedented number of ordinary folk lining the pavements, give credence to that.

I'll raise a wee dram of The MacAllan to her, at 11:00 today - as I'm sure 'Spokie and M. L'ecossais (freescorfr) are doing, for this Great Scot.

Slainte Bha!

Apple juice for me Jimi. I am touched by it. She was what people say on both sides - but of her time and someone who had a life. I think that's great.

I'll pour a scotch for an unsuspecting French visitor on your behalf.
