Lack of feedback.

I put up my entry for the Christmas contest, “A whiter Christmas than ever”, a little over a week ago. The download count has been fine: over 10000 the first week, which is more than I’m used to. Three of my preciously posted stories here on literotica has download counts over 10000, although over a longer period of time, and all three of them has resulted in several feedback letters. This time I haven’t even had a single, anonymous, one line letter; nothing at all. It might not be the best story I’ve ever written, but still. What happened to the readers? Anyone experienced similar reactions or rather lack of reactions from the readers?

Kind regards

Henrik

I have gotten quite a few votes and views, but the only feedback that I received on my Christmas story was within the first few hours of it being posted (with the exception of one from a fellow author).

It seems that there is a pattern. You get more views than votes and more votes than feedback. Not sure why, but that seems to be how things go.

Feedback on Contest Story

I've had quite a lot of feedback, all positive and surprisingly few that were anonymous. Around 5000 views and 70 odd votes but the score seems to yo-yo significantly and doesn't correlate with the amount of positiveness that the feedback suggests.

Incidentally, you should remember that a "view" doesn't necessarily mean that the story's been read. Lots of times people will do just that: have a peek at the story and move on without reading it. There's no real way to tell how many times it's been read.

I think it'll probably be tough to get feedback on a holiday story while the contest is running. Many people unfortunately take story criticism as a personal insult and are not above retaliation by low voting.

I'm getting less and less feedback. My current ongoing story, Death by Fucking has seventeen chapters all told. I was inundated with feedback for the first ten or so, but since then the response has been less than overwhelming.

The number of views remains about the same from chapter to chapter, and the scoring is still pretty good. My last chapter is sitting around 4.85, but I've only received feedback from three readers. Go figure.

I'm glad to hear that other writers have experienced this. I was beginning to worry.

:) :) :)

4.85 is quiet impressive. That ought to give more feedback. I mean, the voting is mainly to stay on one of the lists and keep getting more views. The feedback is the real 'reward', at least for me.

i agree, feedback is the reward. it has been some time since i last submitted a new story, but every once in a while i get a feedback. i can't click it open fast enough. lol i've checked my stats on occasion and my highest so far has been a 4.6 and the lowest is 4.02 of my four stories. i'm more than pleased with that. it kinda inspires me to finish up the ones that i'm working on now.

Lack of Feedback

I noted the same experience of declining feedback in a separate thread: 'Am I imagining it?'

I don't take too much notice of the votes here because there are too many 'spoilers' who vote 1 to knock a story off the lists (some of my stories have recently been attacked systematically) but I was getting a reasonable amount of e-mails. This seems to have dried up and I can offer no explanation for it.

You can't compel readers to give feedback but I'm reassured to learn it's not just me that's affected.

Genrally, i think the moderaters are doing a fair job of weeding out hte malicious 1 votes, but it is difficlt. One of my stories have been systematically attacted, despite several interventions from the moderators. No sooner have they adjusted the score before another 1 comes along. The stry never had more than 12 'regular' votes, so it's pretty easy to attack. Needless to say that the view count is low. Pity, because it is one of my more popular stories on other sites.

Anyway, i noticed that we're both designated "virgins". When wwas the last time you were a virgin, Tiger? :)

Feedback vs Voting

It has been my experience that I get 1 or less feedback letters on average per piece and rarely more than 15 or so votes even though I may have thousands of views. I have one friend who is an actual published author with a bestselling regional title in the Midwest. Recently, he began contributing stories to LIT also and one of his first comments to me was that he couldn't understand how he could possibly have 20,000 views and not have 20,000 votes!LOL

Literotica is a great site, but the voting/feedback system is not very satisfactory for authors. Unless you're a female author with an attractive Av, you'll probably get most of your feedback only as long as your story's in the "New" list. Different authors report different amounts of feedback during this period. I usually get maybe 4-6 pieces during this time, and that seems to be close to average. Once your story slips off the "new" list, the feedback pretty much stops coming.

Some people suggest putting a note at the end of your story asking for feedback, but I don;t know how well that works.

The best thing is probably to post on this board and invite feedback, but make sure that you're really interested in hearing people's honest opinions and not just inviting praise.

If you really want to put your story under close scrutiny, consider submitting it to the "Story Discussion Circle" board. Things are very quiet over there lately, and stories posted there get some pretty good and fairly deep analysis.

For what it's worth, I can tell you that my stories (I've posted 29) seem to generate a vote for every 120 or so openings, and a feedback for about every 10 or so votes. 'Bolero', my most popular story, has been opened something like 110,000 times and has about 1100 votes and about 130 feedbacks. On the other hand, I have others -- Afterglow comes to mind -- that have less than 10,000 openings and about 5 feedbacks. These stories have been posted some time ago. For what it's worth, feedbacks continue to come long after the story was posted. Baton Rouge is a few years old, and someone sent a note just today. That's not unusual.

Lack of feedback hits everyone I guess

Lit.com has posted 4 of my stories so far... I've written many many more that are not yet posted...

I'm NOT a writer of any kind, just a person with an active imagination. I was encouraged to submit them to lit.com, so I thought I'd give it a go.

Here's the latest story, This time a romantic one,
http://www.literotica.com/stories/showstory.php?id=112565

I've also written EIGHT POOLS which is an Exihibitionist/Voyeur type story

THE OASIS which is an Erotic Coupling story, and

SENSORY DEPRIVATION which is a BDSM story.....

I'm trying to stretch my abilities, but would like others opinions.
I've received a few replies from a few readers, both anonymous and otherwise... I was also reading about the lack of votes and/or replies from readers... I too am glad to know that other authors have been experiencing the same things...

I have a question for all.... of those who write, do you ever send them to people OUTSIDE of lit.com?
For example, I have over 300 email addresses of people that I'm met in various chat rooms, all who've asked me to send my stories to them? Does anyone else do that???

Good Evening:

About the email addresses you have of people who've asked you to send them your sotires: may I usggest you give them a link to your stories on Literotica? You can go to search stories, do a search for you as author, and use that URL as a link to email to your email friends.

The advantages of doing this from your perspective might be that you'll have a record of the number of times your stories have been read. they may vote for you, there's an easy way for them to offer feedback -- you know, all of the things that makes Literotica a nice place to post.

stories outside of lit.com

My only thing is this... if I hadnt sent out my stories to those who's addy's I have, I would never have heard of lit.com.

All of these people have already read the stories, but I have given the links to them anyways. I'm not sure exactly HOW many peeps have gone there and voted, but I have gotten some feedback from them. Mostly them saying, "I always liked this story" or something to that effect.

Twas just curious if others did this as well...

Very true. The unwritten rule (made not by moderators but by readers' scarce time & fickle tastes) is that in order to receive votes & feedback, a story must be either new, or by the same author as a story that is. After my latest story was approved, I received votes galore & a little feedback, both of which spilled over a little to my older stories. When people read something new & like it, some will check the author's bio to see what else that person has written.

Votes and Feedback

I get about votes on about .1% of views. That's about one vote per every thousand views. Most of my stories, even if they have had twenty or thirty thousnd views, have produced no feedback at all. Not all my stories but most. I like to think that people start reading stories and get so aroused after a few paragraphs that they wank or frig themselves and get off, and don't finish the story. Then they don't vote or make any comment because, after all, they can't properly express an opinion since they didn't read the whole story. At least, that's I like to think.;)

Well, damn! I'm sure going to read your stories!

Feedback

I agree with the one post, about getting more feedback when the story is in the "new" section. I really wish there was away to post to the public forum under the story without having to vote on your own story. If anyone knows please tell.
