labels are like race i believe ... some people say the world would be better if we were all one race and we put our differences aside ... other people would say we should embrace different races and cultures

i think labels can be good ... i am happy being a lesbian ... if i could choose i would still be gay ... i've never blown a whistle or gone on a gay pride march ... but i am kinda proud to be gay

yet i know a lot of people say its best to just forget labels and go with what feels good ... i guess that makes sense too ... (i'd still just sleep with girls because that's what feels good for me) ... but i dont think i'd want to give up my label ... i worked hard to get it and it took a lot of thinking and soul searching when i was younger and then more as i get older as i came out to my family

sorry if my post sounds a bit indecisive but do you see pluses and minus'es for labels ?

anyone that first posts this gets a bop on the head :)

The moral of the story is just be happy being who you are.

Period.

Thank you!

Well, dear SG

Someone has to post first in order to get the thread rocking!

And a good thread at that.

There are times when labels serve a purpose whether on a personal level or in terms of non sexual issues.

Personally, it has been sometime since I referred to myself as a sub, unless in jest. I will tell you, I am submissive...it is part of my character, the label doesn't serve a purpose for me.

If you view my profile, I use several different "labels" in order to avoid lenghty explanation. Sometimes, labels serve to put out the general idea and the rest needs to be explored. i.e. homemaker, single mom, social worker....They tell you where to begin the conversation but, what being gay to you will mean something totally different to me, as will all these other labels, roles or titles.

There are times they are an effective TOOL, but I don't believe labels should be the definition. Get the label, then get the explanation or definition.

Damn! I am tired and rambling. Sorry dear!

hugs to you

:rose:

i knew someone was going to say that :)

thanks miss taken i think thats excellant way of looking at it ... be yourself not be the label i guess :) but that doesnt mean cant use labels

Me too!

I think lables happen before someone gets to know another. In most cases, if someone does take that time to get to know someone, the label disappears.

The only time I believe in labels are when it's on my food boxes. It's the only time I care.

Sometimes it's fun to go into a store just to look for the union labels. They're not as easy to find as you might think.

I always thought homosexuality to be an act of doing and gay as being a lifestyle.

Meaning, just because someone is intimate with someone of the same sex, a gay person that does not make.

Many would disagree.

My point being, because we don't have universal understandings of what labels mean, it's almost a moot point.

Yeah, as if you don't have Matell branded on your body.;)

Labels are just shorthand- quick, but the interpretation is a bit subjective.

That's just so I know who I am at all times.

I think that everyone labels others. Whether consciously, or not. It's just another form of prejudging and doesn't necessarily mean anything.

Without labels there would be no meanings. And it would be hard to find the right size pants, too.

glam i had to think about this one ... not sure why i deserved thanks but my pleasure :)

Gay and homosexual are pretty much synonyms these days.

What do you consider a "gay lifestyle" and how is a person who sleeps with the same sex not gay (bisexuality nonwithstanding)?

Thats like saying you're a woman but don't really live the female lifestyle...

I think the confusion surrounding this particular label stems from preconcieved notions on how a gay person is supposed to act without taking into consideration the entire spectrum.
