introduction to the characters and the story

Rob Middleton and Duane Brooks are hardboiled private detectives in L.A. in the fifties

Duane Brooks and Rob Middleton are confronted by an innocent-looking, stunning beauty, a cool young lady named Lorna Harper.

In a desperate mood, Lorna tells Duane and Rob that she is from New York and that her younger sister Gloria is missing. She asks Duane and Rob for help in locating her sister, who vanished after she moved from New York to L.A..
Gloria and Lorna’s father died when they were younger. There mother always worked in New York as a secretary. Gloria always aspired to be a dancer and actress. Gloria is not only exceptional beautiful, but she is also very social minded. When she graduated from High School she could start in a studio acting school in L.A.

Lorna tells the detectives that Gloria was the top and she was offered a job in a popular game show. She was co-hosting next to the popular Mr. Ralph Van Doren. The show was produced by Mr. Davis, one of the studio bosses.
In 1955 the television quiz "Mind challenge" was a ratings hits. Every week the American nation turns for the charming, erudite Ralph Van Doren, the quizmaster of the show,

in his quest to vanquish new challengers. Wanton doe-eyed Gloria quickly became popular as the hostess, paired with the wickedly Mr. Van Doren in the popular quiz show.

Lorna continues her story and tells the detectives that one day she was invited to visit the set and the show. Lorna and her mother were worried about Gloria. Lorna tells them that her sister was a virgin and sexually naive. Her mother feared that the movie industry would spoil her innocent daughter.
Gloria had gotten a back pass from Mr. Dale, the producer of the game show. She had sent it up to her sister in New York. Lorna travelled to L.A. and went to the studio to watch the show.

That night Lorna meets mrs. Davis. She is a little bit drunk and she mocks Gloria. She tells Lorna, that every hostess in the show is a toy girl for the studio staff. Disturbed about this news Lorna looks for Gloria.

She finds her sister outside, leaning against a car in the company of Mr. Trenton. Lorna sees how Mr. Trenton caresses Gloria’s face and lips. Gloria opens her mouth and sucks on his thumb. Lorna steps forward and asks what is going on. Gloria is visible embarrassed. Gloira introduces Mr. Trenton as an important banker in L.A. He finances a lot of studio projects. Lorna inists to know what is going on, but Gloria says it is something personal;
Mr. Trenton leaves but pads Gloria’s ass, and gives Lorna a grinning look. Gloria turns her face away from Mr. Trenton and casts her eyes down, when he tries to kiss her. Gloria asks him to leave. Gloria was ashamed about Mr. Trenton’s behaviour. She lets her sister swear not to tell anything about what she saw to a living soul. She assured her sister that there is nothing going on that she can’t handle.

Mrs. Davis tells Lorna that Mr; Trenton is a dangerous man, who has tricked Gloiria in his sex games; Mrs. Davis tells Lorna that Mr. Trenton has it in for kinky sex.

He has semi-sadistic sexual preferences and has a tendency to become increasingly violent with his girls. Every girl involved with Mr. Trenton is subjected to gross indignities his hand.
Gloria walks by as Mrs. Harris talks to Lorna. She sees Gloria and causes embarrassment for Gloria when she asks her what kind of contraceptive she uses.
Gloria protests and says that she doesn't use contraception, leading Mrs. Davis to make a guess as to why she does not use a contraceptive. Then she whispers in Lorna’s ear: "Of course. Oral sex."

After Gloria’s disappearance, the police had interrogated Mr. Van Doren and Mr. Trenton but they claimed t that they know nothing about her disappearance. Mr Van Doren suggested that Gloria was young and beautiful. He said that he remembered that she mentioned some boy. She probably had a crush on some boy and now , she probably was in a motel having the time of her life.
The police agreed with Mr. Van Doren and they stopped their investigation.
A month before Gloria was missing her mother received a letter from Gloria.Gloria wrote that Mr. Van Doren had introduced her to Mr. Trenton and that she would meet him in Hotel Astoria.
That was the last time she was seen. Lorna made an appointment with Mr. Trenton in his hotelroom. He wouldn't tell Lorna where Gloria was. He said she didn't want to see her sister. Lorna can't believe that.

Lorna contiuens her story and says Mr. Trenton has violent tendencies: Lorna believes Mr. Trenton to be a "dangerous man" who wouldn't stop at anything - he might even kill her sister. Mr. Brooks thinks that Mr. Trenton is linked to the mob. He knows that the movie industry is a way to legalize criminal money.
Loran asks Mr. Brooks and Mr. Middleton to gain entrance in Mr. Trenton’s hotel room to look for any clues that could reveal the whereabouts of Gloria.
The detectives agree and they make a plan. Lorna and Laura, the secretary of the detective agency, try to seduce Mr. Trenton. While the ladies keep him busy, Rob and Duane enter his hotel suite; They break the safe and find an 8 mm movie.
When they return they see that they are followed by some goons. They agree to go to a safe house, in the hills around L.A. and they split up. Rob takes Lorna with him and Duane goes together with Laura; The mobsters follow the car of Duane and Laura.

Max

W.W. II veteran Max Cordi is 38. He is a loner in the mean streets of L.A. He is traumatized because he is the only survivor of his unit. He doesn’t understand why he is still alive and he has nightmares. In his mind the war is not over.
In solving his insomnia he takes a job as a cab driver on the night shift.
He grows increasingly disgusted by the low-lives, the scum of the street, criminals and hookers, that hang out at night. He did not fight a war to see whores, pimps, alcoholics and low lives on the streets. He is slipping slowly into isolation and violent misanthropy. Driven to the edge by powerlessness, he buys a .44 handgun.

IC - one month earlier, the day Gloria is missing -
Operator’s voice

“Car 41, come in, are you busy”

“Max here, no, I’m free”

operator’s voice
“a telephone call to pick up somebody on warehouse 44, on elm road.”

“Okay, I’m on my way.”

Max cruised through the lower belly of L.A. Elmroad had a bad reputation. Rob expected to pick up some drunk or a prostitute who had finished a client in some alley.

Max turned in Elmroad were he could see a young woman waiting for him.
The young woman did not fit in the dark setting of Elm street. She seemed nervous and kept looking to the left and the right.

Max stopped his cab and the woman entered his cab. She was dressed classy. Max looked through the rear window, and her face seemed familiar to him. All of a sudden he recognized her. She was that girl of that quiz show.

“Whatever was she doing in this bad neighbourhood.?” He thought.

“Sierra drive, 411, please.” She said.

She was sweating as if she had run.

“Okay, Sierra Drive , it is.”

Max started his car and he saw how she looked behind her.

"Are you all right, miss?"

Max drove his cab through the steamy roads of down town L.A. The neon lights hurt his eyes. From time to time he looked in his rear window. The young woman had opened a brown envelope that had been there on her lap.
She looked at some pictures but she did not say a word.
Max drove up Main street. That’s were he had this gloomy feeling that something was not right. He had the same feeling in the battle fields in France, Holland and Germany.
Something was not right and his gut feeling took over. There was this car that seem to follow them.
Max turned in Sierra Street and stopped before the woman’s house. It was a nice place.
“Here we are, miss?”
The woman in the back seat did not move.
“Miss??”

I opened the cardoor. Gloria gracefully stepped out like at lady. She kept her legs together and stepped ou.

“That’ll be 5.90, miss.”

She opened her handbag but she looked aguishly at the car that came along the road.
It was the car that followed us. There were three men in the car and the driver parked his car just across Gloria’s house. They had no intention to hide themselves. They looked boldly at Gloria. Gloria startled when she heard a voice.

“Good evening Gloria, what a nice show it was yesterday.” A friendly voice said.
Gloria looked behind her and greeted an older lady.

“Oh, good evening, Mrs. Moore, so glad you enjoyed it.” She answered the older lady.

“I’m so proud on her, you know, she’s my neighbour.” She said .
It took a second before Max realized she talked to him. Max smiled and nodded.

“Will you come over for a nice cup of tea, dear?” the older lady asked Gloria.
“Mmmh, that sounds delicious, Mrs. Moore, sure I’ll come over.” Gloria answered politely.

Mrs. Moore walked away.
“Sir, would you mind taking me to the railway station. I just remembered I have to pick up somebody.” Gloria said. Her cheeks turned red. Max thought she was not a good liar.
“Sure , miss.” He said and opened the car door.

Gloria stepped back in the cab and the three men across the street stepped out of their car.

“Oh no!!! Quickly drive away.” Gloria said with some panic in her voice.

Max had just started the car when he saw them coming over.

They kind of looked mean, with bushy eyebrows and they all wore trench coats. Max accelerated just when one of them tried to open the car door.

Max watched his rear window and saw the mobsters run for their car.

"Those guys don't look to friendly, miss, you better tell me what is going on, before you drag me down into some mess." Max said to Gloria.

possible plots

the bad guys gather up with Miss Davis, the holywood madame, who runs an escort business for the rich and famous in Holywood. They are after Gloria because she resist Mrs. Davis and the mobsters to become a prostitute for the mobsters. Mr. Trenton is the local godfather.

The mobsters try to capture Gloria and the missing 8 mm movie.

The good guys are the detectives, Lorna and Laura, the secretary.
They team up to find Gloria before the bad guys do, and they find out what is on the 8 mm movie.

Who will find Gloria first???

to find Gloria first talk to Mrs. Moore, she is the last who has seen Gloria, leaving in a cab. Maybe she recalls the number of the cab, that leads to Max.
