The news of Boudica’s death was so unexpected after her stunning victories at Camulodunum, Londinium and Verulamium. I had hoped to lead my own troops to link up with both the Icenis and Cantis and that together we would drive the Romans out of our country. But it was dysentery not the Romans that changed those plans. It weakened Boudicas’s forces and by the time the Legions struck her resistance was over.
Now I was faced with a choice, return to my home in Caledonia and marry the son of a chieftain of a rival tribe as my father would wish. Or continue lead my people South in the hope of at least driving the invaders back to Anglesey. Very heavy rain delayed the option of an immediate return North long enough for the decision to be taken out of my hands.
Gara, the widow of one of the Caledonian leaders came running into our encampment saying a small group of Romans was less than half a day away. I summoned my warriors and told them of the threat. I sent out my scouts and on their return we drew up a plan of attack and two nights later we struck while the Romans were off guard.
This small contingent of Romans had seized a small village, killed the elderly, sent the children to a local settlement to be raised as house slaves, enslaved the young men to be sold to traders for training as gladiators and taking the young women the brothel tent to be used as sex slaves.
I always believed in leading from the front and I crept up on the unsuspecting lookout thrusting my dagger into his neck severing his trachea so fast he couldn't even raise an alarm. As soon as he died I gave our archers the signal and simultaneously half of the Roman contingent were despatched to the afterlife. Sounds of alarm were heard in the brothel tent but by the time the Romans realised what had happened we were on them showing no mercy. By morning smoke from the ruins were all that was left of that small Roman encampment. We released the men and women and those who wanted to were told they could train to fight alongside us.
We now had sufficient food, weapons and horses to get back to Caledonia. My people had a short celebration that night and acclaimed me ‘Kyla, the She Wolf Enemy of Rome!'
