Kony 2012

Warning the video is graphic and may be triggering.

ETA:
I have been getting some worrisome news about this film. Kony is an evil man, there is no question about that. But there are some very strong whiffs of moneyscamming going on, and your money, if you give it to IC may not do the good you want it to do.

Before you give your money to the invisible Children group, please read this post, and follow a few of the links in it:

It's really hard to type thorugh my tears. Thanks for sharing this. It's hard to believe this happens, has been happening for so very long. Someone like Kony can kill your faith in humankind, butt hen you see jpeople stepping up like this and it restores it. We, the citizens of the world regarldless of where we live, can an must stop him.

We do have the collective power and ability to stop these things, especially with such well-organized and impassioned efforts such as this one. I'm hopeful he'll be arrested this year.

Not just Uganda, but many countries in Africa. The sadder part is when one of these self made despots falls, another takes his place and the cycle never breaks.

From a blogger in 2006:
Uganda is no longer experiencing violence from the LRA. Yes, I said it. It’s an uncomfortable truth, but it is a truth. For about the last year, since before IC hit the scene, Kony and his troops have been pushed into Congo, into the Garamba National Forest there. He’s sick, starving, and on his last legs. For the first time, Uganda is in the middle of real peace talks and the rebels have laid down their arms and are assembling to make peace. Why? This is happening because Joseph Kony was defeated. The Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF) has beaten them back and Kony was sitting in Congo starving to death. Since March 2002, the UPDF has been allowed to carry out raids against the LRA into Southern Sudan and has even crossed into Congo, to the distress of most of the African community. Nonetheless, Operation Iron Fist, as this military offensive was called, has freed many child soldiers and sex slaves and brought them back to Uganda. The rebels again became very violent in 2003, but since 2004, the Ugandan government has been repeatedly beating the rebels and weakening them. Uganda is no longer allowed to enter Sudan or Congo to fight the LRA.

Invisible Children was founded in 2004, with the film crew filming in Uganda in 2003. Watching Invisible Children is watching old news. Will watching it alert you to what has occurred in Uganda? Yes, but it will not let you know what is happening there today.

I don't know about you all, but I SO FUCKING HATE being lied to for profit.

Yeah, I was all geared up and stuff after watching the video this morning, but after reading what your kindly self posted, Stella, I'm beginning to think I should stop feeling things just from watching youtube videos. The cause may be worthy, but that doesn't automatically make one immune to accountability, nor does it make me obliged to support it, especially if they are, in fact, being deceitful.

That said, once I've done some research of my own (probably shouldn't have to be prodded into becoming intellectually responsible for things like that, but hey) I'll certainly be giving to a worthier organization.

Invisible Children's Official Response...

Thank you, Stella. I'm not a fan of being lied to either, so I looked into this a little bit. Invisible Children's official response/statement, which includes fairly detailed financial information, references, and program strategy/goals can be found here:

What do you think?

Thanks Emily, that is very intersting and really well detailed. It seems convincing to me on a first read.

one thing I notice is that it now claims four members on the board instead of three as the article I found claimed. So things have changed a bit since then.

And I have to say, the part about maintaining the FM stations makes SO much good sense to me!

Also read some iffy things about this. Kony is already most-wanted on the war crimes list and has been since 2005. He hasn't been in Uganda for 6 years. There are already people out there trying to track him down and bring him to justice and have been for some time. Hopefully they will succeed.

I suspect this (the Kony2012 stuff) is really all about some white dudes wanting to get rich by cynically manipulating the emotions of some other white dudes.

I've seen some questions raised about the film company to and its manipulation of what it puts to film in the past.

Doesn't negate anything on this tragedy, but suggests being wary about the film company as well.

Kony obviously grew up admiring Idi Amin's style of dictatorship. Over thirty years of tyranical rule, because no one cares enough to step in and make sure the people have a real leadership, instead of despot of the day. Why aren't UN troops there making sure democracy is carried out? Once Ugandans have it, they'll never see anything more of the misery they live in now.
