The ad read simply "Groundskeeper Summer-hire" and listed a phone number. When Billy called it he got a recording. An old luxury hunting lodge, in Canada, had been purchased by a Chinese firm, and was being reopened. They were looking for a summer-hire who had '..some electrical, carpentry, and plumbing skills." In High School Billy had worked as carpenter on weekends for a neighbor. And after High School he had worked for a commercial Contractor fixing various sub-contrators mistakes. Billy might do drywall repair, wiring, plumbing, etc. He had enjoyed learning elements of various trades, but the job was basically 'seasonal'. He was lucky when he got more than nine months work a year.

The Chinese woman who interviewed Billy told him that the lodge had been thoroughly renovated. Each suite had its own living room, kitchen, and bathroom. And because of the its remote location It had its own hydroelectric powerplant -- which Billy would be required to monitor. It seemed odd to Billy that nobody from the renovation crew had stayed to work as a groundskeeper. And it seemed odd that they were hiring an maid/cook -- and it would just be the two of them until they hired more staff. But then again the job didn't really pay that well. However it did include room and board, and the hunting and fishing were supposed to be incredible.

Billy scoured the internet trying to find out anything he could about the lodge, that the interviewer had referred to vaguely as Grizzly Mountain. Eventually he stumbled onto black and white pictures and a story from an old hunting magazine. The lodge was huge and spectacular. Perched on a cliff, next to a waterfall, it looked down on a broad lush valley.

"Why was closed?" Billy mused. ".. drugs, corruption?" The part about the lodge being located above the fabled valley of Kokopalia -- where the fertility spirits lived -- gave Billy a good laugh. Apparently it had amused the author as well who pointed out that even though Grizzly Mountain didn't appear on any maps, that part of Canada had not been extensively mapped -- and how can you purchase a piece of property that's not on some map?!

Billy looked around the plane trying to figure out who the new maid/cook might be. He wouldn't know until he got off the plane in Canada. There he would meet somebody at the airport who would take him, and the maid to a van, that he or the maid would drive to the lodge. Of course they would have to provide Billy and the maid with directions. It was a goofy arrangement but maybe the Chinese were superstitious about the lodge? So it would just be Billy and the maid there at first.

Billy figured it would be a pretty laid back job, and a nice summer break from construction. Maybe the maid would be in her early twenties like him? Billy wasn't overly muscular, but he was tall -- six-two -- and broad shouldered. He had thick, slightly messy, light brown hair that would bleach out during the summer. He never had any trouble meeting women, but living at home, with his parents, had put a bit of a damper on his social life.
