Most LIT stories open with Edward Jones at the door or the old asshole from next door bitching that your cat shit in her petunias again. Or maybe its PILOT from the neighborhood beautification committee with a warning that your bucket of cherry tomatoes violate the deed restrictions against veggies (tomato is a fruit).

But sometimes its a package delivered by UPS or a pretty woman wanting a minute of your time or a special delivery letter from a police department 3000 miles away, and the only soul you know in Southern California is LAUREL, and her letter begins, ON PAIN OF DEATH, DISTURB THE PEACE AT LIT AGAIN, AND YOUR LIFE SHALL PAY THE FORFEIT.

Story openings are knocks on your door.
