Hey, I'm stuck in the hospital with very little to do, so I'm finishing up a sweater. We've had a couple craft threads on and off and I'd like to get one going and kinda keep it. I've got a folder full of fair isle/inarsia patterns that I made a million years ago that I recently found. They were made on a shitty on-line thing back in the days before I had PCStitch, but I thought I'd share some in case anyone else cared.

Here's some Sonic Chao

I've only ever knitted enough to make wash cloths, which are wonderful. I started a spiral blanket and got tired of the project. But I saved my place in case I ever felt like finishing it.

I find knitting impossible to do, personally. It looks so intricate and difficult.

Once you get into a rhythm, it isn't too bad, but it can be frustrating trying to fix dropped stitches and the like, as a beginner especially. It's honestly why I never bothered to progress passed wash cloths.

I have a friend who's an amazing knitter - she's made such intricate, beautiful art work with yarn. It's neat just to watch.

Knitting's nothing. It's just 2 stitches. Crochet is fucking... I can do it if you explain it to me, like my bf's of Celtic descent and he's crocheted all these old school, like half-Galic instructions from his Disney villianess-esque grandma, and I look at those all like... "What the fuck is this gibberish?"

There are THOUSANDS of crochet stitches. I can crochet a pattern, but you have to explain it to me, you can't just give me the pattern.

This guy is truly a god among men.

Mhm. My mom makes all of my sister's hats and scarves. They're so beautiful and actually work and keep her warm. Not all spaced out with holes and stuff. She is really into it. She's learning about gloves now but said fuck it and just made them mitts lol

I really rarely make things like cloths because I have a hard time actually using them as cloths. I've got to be using the wrong thing. I've never wound up with something that actually absorbs like it's supposed to. It just kinda... sits there.

I use some cheap yarn from Michael's when it's a dollar a skein. I can't remember the name, but I can look in my stash. I've also knitted some strips of that rough tulle material and use it as a scrubby. I love that. I should stop being lazy and knit some more.

I actually have a bunch of pink tulle left over from a dress I made bitesize that I was thinking of cutting up for yarn. I was wondering what I could do with it. That's a really good idea.

Man, I miss craft stores.

And I should learn. :cattail:

Start on ginormous needles. Is my only real advice. Like 13s or someshit. Giant needles and bulky yarn and then ween yourself down. Because once you get to lightweights it takes for-fuck-all-ever to make everything. That's part of the reason I was so shocked over that poster saying they did socks as like their second project?? What the actual fuck?? I did socks like two years in and I STILL hate them!

Look at this painting from 1837. See how there's 4 different needles just waiting for your stitches to fall off?

Our 'don't drop all your stitches' technology has not evolved in 400 FUCKING YEARS!

And if you drop a stitch it's so much harder to get it back with just a crochet hook and a dream. Because your stitches as tiny as fuck. Feels like some operation shit.

Yeah, I just knit it along some yarn. Strips of t-shirt type material would probably work just as well. Just a bitch to bind off.

It's not so bad, really and does make for a good mindless activity.

I'm the poster! Do you know how to pick up a dropped stitch with a crochet hook?

Do you also sew? I make modern design quilts.

I do cosplay so clothes and stuff. I'm trying to learn how to quit just to cut into my stash. I have a baby who doesn't have the skill to tell me that my stuff is ugly, so I'm gonna dump it on her room when I'm done. Quitling is... not easy. My back is fucked up so I can't use a machine, so it takes... I've been working on this one almost a year and I'm not even halfway done.

Yes, I have been teaching myself from books and you tube videos. I have made about 8 baby sized quilts so far. I did splurge on a great sewing machine. My mom was a sewer so the sound of a sewing machine puts me in a happy place.

Doesn't it kill you to bend over it, tho?

You mean the sewing machine? I use an office chair and lower it so I can keep my posture from not killing me. I am almost 5'10. I put my machine on a big square table to give me a lot of room.

Maybe I just need to angle different or something. It seems like my back is always aching whenever I try to use one. But I don't have a dedicated sewing area either...

Have you ever used one of them loom things? My wife just got one. I guess you can make scarves and hats in no time. She started learning to knit over the summer.

I have one, but I haven't used it because I tend to knit... places. Like when I'm out. And you pack that thing around.
