... and your next NFL contract won't be as big.
Reports are that NFL revenues are down $200 million so far this year. A continuation of the trend will without doubt impact every team's salary cap.
For those who don't know, the NFL sets a salary cap of how much teams can spend annually on players. The current cap is $167 million. It seems like only yesterday the figure was half that but that just shows how wildly popular the NFL had been.
Older NFL players who take a knee during the anthem aren't hurting themselves. In this league, I'd say 28 or 29 qualifies as old, since most NFL careers end well before that.
So a slightly above average 25-year-old who takes a knee could also be taking a knee to the nuts when his new contract comes up. If the salary cap slips to $150 million per year (instead of rising to $180), and the QB is already guaranteed $20 million a year and a half-dozen other players are already making half that, the slice of the pie for the 25-year-old is suddenly a few million short of what he had in mind.
Unless he gets cut.
Is taking a knee worth that?
