The Netherlands is currently considering a new reclamation project: To build an island off the coast of Holland (in the North Sea). This isn't the first time the Dutch have "built" land; the province of Flevoland was completely reclamed from the IJselmeer (sea).

The question isn't about whether or not it's cool to reclaim land from the sea, but the shape of the proposed island:

Kitschy-y, or cool?

It could be worse, I suppose. The proposal could have been an island in the shape of a cannabis leaf.

Full article here, though it's in Dutch, so good luck. ;)

Personally,, I'm leaning towards... um, 'tacky'.

I don't have any problem with building a new island, the earth does it on it's own all the time. (Well, all the time on a geographic time scale). But a flower shaped island. Reminds me of somthing you'd see in Vegas.

I'm almost surprised to say I like it. Thinking of a flower shaped island I think silly. Seeing it... I kinda like it.

The cannabis leaf idea has potential as an extreme luxury housing development. The natural shape of the leaf lends itself to multiple estates with their own little cove.

Actually, it's more like what you can see off the coast of Dubai -- where they've built (or are building) several islands in the shape of palm trees, seashells, stars, etc.

I don't see any particular reason that a man-made island has to be ugly or lumpish so I guess a Tulip shaped Island built by the Dutch isn't unreasonable.

Tacky... on the ground it's just another 'island'. Only looks like a tulip from 10k feet. It's a copy of the 'palm tree islands' in Dubai.

Can we build one in the shape of a cowboy hat and exile His Imperial Bushness to it?

Yeah, me too. I couldn't put my finger on what it was that bothered me about it, but I think this is an apt description. It's like Disneyland where everything is make-believe based on some semblance of reality. Great when you're a kid, but as an adult?

:D I could see this!

The news article I linked to shows a photo of the place in Dubai. It strikes me as oddly as the tulip idea. It's just so ... artificial. But then, I like real plants and trees as opposed to silk or plastic ones. :)

Good point about what it looks like on the ground. As for the other, I actually think Dubai copied Holland. I believe thier reclamation project for the province of Flevoland started in the 1950's.
