No, I don't know any stories like that, but it is an interesting idea.

How about this: A dominates B, and B dominates C. So far, strictly hierarchical. But the twist is that C also dominates A, bringing it full-circle. I'm not sure how you spin that into a story, but it's a vibrant dynamic, I think.
