I was reminded of this by a recent re-watch of Taboo, Tom Hardy's historical show on Netflix.

Taboo includes a lot of taboo shit, inclusive of cannibalism, torture, sexual assault and murder. That show is extra, an over-the-top confrontation between the show's protagonist and three different governments. One of the big plot points, though, is incest between half-siblings James Delaney and his sister Zilpha Geary, played by the amazing Oona Chaplin.

Watching that story play out, I thought it would actually make a pretty amazing story in Literotica's Incest category. The downside being how it ends (no spoilers), but in general, unusual kinks can make it into mainstream movies and books with their full impact kind of soft-soaped.

What kink-friendly mainstream shows and movies have had this kind of impact on you?

If you read my fanfic, you’ll see many kink-friendly mainstream media that has influenced me. Too much to list everything but the works of Garth Ennis, Mike Binder, Kevin Smith, Garry Marshall, and Marti Noxon are good places to start.

The foot fetish scene from The Last Emperor by Bertolucci. That was really something. There is a foot scene in 1900 by Bertolucci but not as explicit. God, I miss such directors :(

Examples of kinky media that has inspired my work but not directly appeared in it include the TV shows Sex & The City and Ally McBeal. I watched these shows in college. Lots of kinks in them. :D

I thought so: she's Charlie Chaplin's granddaughter. His fourth and final wife was Oona O'Neill.

Perhaps cannibalism and necrophilia cross the line from kink into something else. For one thing, they are illegal in most places. One might away with it if one found the body of a homeless person and absconded with it.

People like Ed Gein and Jeffrey Dahmer weren't "kinky;" they were criminally insane.

Cannibalism is a weird one, because in literature it can be deeply metaphorical/spiritual too. I remember reading the origin tale of Maharet and Mekare in Ann Rice's Queen of the Damned and it really touched me at the time. All dead things are consumed, it's nature's way, and being consumed by your loved ones seems like the kindest way to go, an act of deep intimacy and respect (until prion diseases get involved but hey ho.).

Then let's not forget that babies are born of their mothers and literally consume their mother's reserves to grow. It's not all gore and zombies.

Some stuff from my video collection of non porn:

Diana Rigg in The Avengers;
Peter O'Toole bound and foot-teased by Jeanne Moreau in "Great Catherine";
Benny Hill as the BBW-loving boffin in "The Italian Job";
Mom/Son scene in Le Souffle au Cour, 1971. (Powerful use of jump-cuts make it more intense)

There was Lady Heather in CSI - a recurring character who was a dominatrix meeting every cliche tickbox - 'English', wealthy, titled, runs a club with very strict membership requirements and rules and protocol, unnerving Grissom and colleagues who fancied her...

Women being chloroformed, gagged, and tied up (while not messing up hair or makeup!) was a TV and book cliché - lots in James Bond films, the Avengers, Penelope Pitstop, Nancy Drew...

Great. Now I find myself wanting to research Lady Heather and ship her with Catherine Willows and/or Sarah Grissom for a femslash fanfic. She’s willing to drop the dominatrix thing because that’s not my kink as a writer. Or maybe I will have to include it somehow if I can convince myself the characters are into it so it’s ok the way I did in my God of War story. Thx Kumquatqueen!

Edit- ok, never mind. The show’s fan wiki showed me that character’s arc was too exhaustive to give me an opening. Oh well.

Okay, not mocking or criticizing anybody in any way, but gunhilltrain has a point when he referred to crossing a line. As somebody once noted, if you use a feather in bed, it’s kink. Now if you use the whole chicken…

Kink to me is something you could find mentioned in, say, Cosmo on a good day, something a fairly average couple might try, just to see. Necrophilia and cannibalism are no more ‘kinky’ than is flogging somebody with a bullwhip until their bones show. I don’t equate kink to something you see in a horror movie.

But, as I said, that’s me. Is there a line?
