Detective Sarah Travis

How long had it been since she'd been back home? Over 5 years ago...? It was something in that area and usually Sarah didn't dwell on the past but this time, she let herself think about what had happened when she last came home and it made her heart do little flip flops just thinking about it. She hadn't talked with Shane Wright since that night. Oh, she heard rumors from her parents of how thing were going back home but nothing too much about Shane. Just that she knew he had made chief of police and yeah, she was happy for him. He was a good cop. He was even a good boss.

But Sarah had always wanted more in life. It wasn't that she hated life in a small town but a bigger city had more to offer and so, she followed her heart. What started out as her and Shane joining the police academy together and then working side by side ended with her leaving to purse her life as a big city detective with Shane staying behind.

Yeah, they had a thing going but even though she was sure Shane saw it as a 'thing', she had seen it as much more. But she never told him that. Not even when she left.

But, now, she was back. Back not just because of family but also, to follow up on a case that was related to one in Chicago. It was the holidays and she was due some time off so, what better way than to mix a little family time with some business? Besides, she was sure Shane was dating. He was always a handsome looking guy and as they had gotten older, he just seemed to get more handsome. There was always some woman after him. Like Lily from the dinner. Or even Mary from the feedstore...

This was only a visit and the only business she had was a favor to ask of Shane which was strictly going to be professional....

It was late in the day when Sarah drove up to her family's homestead and shut off the car engine. The flight was short but the drive after, well, she hated driving such long distances alone. She had phoned her parents a few times to let her know she was on her way and give them a time she'd be home. Her mother insisted she was going to make some big dinner for her homecoming, even if she didn't want it.

That was fine, as long, she remembered telling her mother, it was just her parents and herself.

But, deep down, Sarah knew her mother wasn't having that because as she looked around after getting out of her car, Sarah saw a truck parked in the drive way. She knew it wasn't her parents but someone they had probably invited...

Prague Oklahoma was the town that Shane Wright became the new Chief of Police. It was a small city just north east of Oklahoma city , it’s population continued to grow as the big city was expanding more people wanted to live in a quiet town, So Prague was grown with new housing, business and all the other things that was quickly changing it to a average size city. What comes with expansion, crime and crime was up in this city and Shane was the new man to counteract this increase. His many years experience in law enforcement benefited him when he decided to run and was appointed by the city council.

The day he received his promotion the city had its little party and Mary Myers, M&M most people called her was the first one to run up and give Shane a big hug and a well planted kiss upon his lips. Shane had to actually pull her off of him. “Come down M&M.” Shane politely asked of her. He like her but she was a little on the rambunctious side and well he wasn’t that hyper. “I will talk to you later M&M, I have some people to meet and a few other things. She nodded with a smile and moved on and began mingling.

It wasn’t two steps when Lilly walk up and kissed him on the cheek. “Congratulations Shane.” She smiled at him with a little blushing going on. “Thanks Lilly.” Shane put his hand on her waist and had hew walk with him. “So how are your parents..” The conversation continued as they walked back toward the dinner. He was rather hungry and wanted to see Lilly anyway so it all worked out.

Later that night he received a call from a his old partners parents whom wanted him to come over for a dinner on the Friday night around eight pm. He agreed that he would be there for he always like to get the latest news of how is old partner was doing in the big city. He last heard that she made detective a year ago or something like that, but anyway he was interested …

That night he parked his truck out front and walked up and was met at the door and rushed inside. He smile at them and was about to ask what was up them seemed kind of hyper as he would put if for lack of a better word. They just brushed it off as a reaction to some meds. He nodded is understanding. He took his seat and was talking with Sam about fishing when…

Slinging her bag over her shoulder after grabbing it from the backseat, Sarah headed toward the house. The evening was beautiful and warm. All was quiet, nothing like in Chicago where the city was filled with the noise of traffic and sirens and just in general, life. Even though she was only going to be here for a short time, she knew she'd have to get used to it once more.

Before she even made it up the steps, her mother was there to greet her with a wave and then a hug. Her mother practically dragged Sarah inside the house...as she closed the front door behind them, her father was there to greet his daughter as well. There was a lot of commotion of hellos and 'how are you's?' Sarah tried her best to answer her parents but with everyone talking at once, it was a madhouse.

There was one thing Sarah couldn't place and that was her mother's giddiness. She had kept looking toward the dining room and then back at Sarah while they talked a bit.

Setting her bag down by the floor, Sarah looked back up and saw another person standing near the dining room entrance.

Shane.

It took Sarah a moment to get it together and realize it was Shane. To say she was floored would have been an understatement. It was then that Sarah realized her mother was so giddy. Her parents always liked Shane. Hell, what was there not to like? He was honest and nice and always polite and respectful toward her parents. He never took advantage of Sarah, even in high school. They were friends yes, but that one night before she told him she was leaving, they had lost themselves in passion that they had held back for a long time...at least she had been...

"Hey Shane." She said, not sure what to do, walk up and hug him or just stand there like an idiot as her parents seemed to have disappeared from sight.

Shane’s hands were raised up about to show Sam the size of the bass that got off the hook when he jumped up and excused himself and practically ran to the living room. Shane’s Brow arched in a bit of confusion his hand moved up a little more while his fingers snipped at his lip in thought. He left a little out in left field as he started at the two previous occupied chairs that now stood empty. ‘Ok,’ his mind wondered his hand moved up from his lip to starch his once arched brow. He waited for a few more moments, ran the same hand down his face and hand groomed his mustache and beard.

He stood up and straightened and tucked in his shirt into this belted blue jeans. He looked around the room and then the commotion form the front drifted down the small corridor to where he was. The voices were muffled but it was obvious they had invited someone else to the dinner. His mind went to M&M surely they wouldn’t have done that to him. He is constantly fighting her off advances the best he could, as politely as he could and she still just doesn’t get the message. No, they wouldn’t do that, now Lilly was a different story all together but she was going to be working a double this evening so it wouldn’t be her. He just laughed and shook his head, these two were like match makers in heaven for they have already matched about five couples up this year.

Well, He could just eliminate the who guessing game my just going out there and see what is up. He thought about it for a few more moments then shrugged his shoulders and proceeded to walk down the small corridor to the living room entrance. He leaned up against the doorway frame and allowed his brown orbs fall onto someone he hasn’t seen in awhile. The big city detective Sarah Travis his old partner, one of his excellent officers until she needed more and now she made it where she wanted and he was happy for her. There was still that that big portion of him that still reflexes back to those times they had, that night before she left..

Now he was looking at a very successful Detective looking at him slightly caught off guard look upon her face and he had to smile for it was funny her parents had vanished from the room. He had to laugh and smile at her with that big cowboy grin. “Hello Sarah, You look charming as ever.” He looked at her knowing this was an awkward moment for her and well him too but he wasn’t the one that had to have more in her life and well now here they were looking at each other as if they were strangers trying to figure out how to do the two step together without touching each other.

“Okay , I’ll meet you half way.” He grinned and took a couple of steps toward her, He opened his arms up as to give her a friendly hug. “How have you been?”
