I've been ordered to purchase - 2 (that's two) - identical lap tops, with all the conceivable accessories.

They got to be PC based - they just won't let me do Mac's - although - if you know a lot about Mac laptop's I might, might consider getting one Mac and one PC.

I want it all - all the memory I can get - writeable CD - the best modem.

And you should know that I will be useing these for two primary purposes. 1) a "road office, e-mail checker" and 2) Audiovisual production/presentation.

And I'm wonderin' (cause I don't know yet) is their a "black box of some sort" that allows you to import.export video - for laptops? The units (usually rack mount types) I use with our regular computers are big - not very mobile.

So I hope you get the picture here - I want a "road audiovisual production package." Speakers and all.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

So far I'm thinking top of the line Compaque.

Thanks.

I don't know, Sparky. But check out http://www.cnet.com
They have all kinds of tips and suggestions there.
It might be helpful.

Then again, what the hell do I know?
I seem to be the Lit ghost these days.

I'm sure you're right Purp....

But our big honcho's in systems avoid them like the plague - it all boils down to $$$$'s with them.

But these two babies will be special so maybe.

I found these units - Panasonic ToughBooks - that seem to be set up for the work I need to do. Expensive!!!

Sparky dont go Compaq stay very very very far away, they are a living hades to deal with if the least little thing goes wrong, and you loose everything if something bad happens.

As for what to get I don't know, I have just seen many frustrated compaq owners

Check out Sony Vaio too. For what you want, I think these are "it".

I am no computer genius, so my opinion is almost worthless.

I had a Windows based computer that made all the simple tasks I needed to accomplish so complicated that dusting off the old typewriter made more sense most of the time. Dos my ass. Like teaching a robot to cut the grass. By the time you've programmed the stupid thing you could have already mowed three lawns. Stupid.

Since I've owned a Mac, I can get in, and do a project and get out without all the hoop-jumping some people seem to enjoy. There is a lot less software for the Mac, but any GOOD program that exists has a Mac version.

not to get off the subject too far...

But what does everyone think of Dell? I'm thinking of buying a new workstation/desktop from them.

Just in general...

:)

I have an illicit relationship with my laptop. I love my laptop. I stole it from the Stud who is now computerless. ALL the computers are mine! MINE! MINE! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

I like the IBM Thinkpad too. Most laptops are upgradeable, but you can't do it yourself. Thinks to look for.

Screen: Active Matrix or better. The BIGGER the better. It's like shopping for silicone boobs.
Processer: The best there is cause you can't just yank one motherboard and whack in another one.
Gig: Ditto on the processor. You are stuck with the HD you buy.
RAM: Ditto on the processor. You can upgrade, buy you have to pay for it to be done.
CD-ROM: Get a rewriteable if ya'll can, that way you can back up the puter on something bigger than a 3 1/2" floppy or have to purchase an external CD-ROM or Zip Drive.
USB ports errata: New ones will already have this, but if you go cheap and buy used, see if there are USB ports on there for your Virtual Stripper Joy Stick.
Batteries: Some work like camcorder batteries and have a memory. New ones don't. Buy extra. You should also purchase a 12 volt adaptor if you'll be hanging out in cars for a while, why waste the laptop's battery if you can use the car's? Note: If you plug in to a car surge protectors are a must.
Fashionability: Make sure it projects the image you want. If you want everyone to think you're cool, don't buy a candy apple red Corvette, they'll think you're compensating.

CYBER SEX!

Hotgurll69: How big is it?
Big10": It's big baby. I know how to use it too.
Hotgurll69: Ooooooooh, that sounds so hot. Tell me more.
Big10": It's an 800.
Hotgurll69: 800?
Big10": Yeah, it's an 800mHz processor.
Hotgurll69: Processor?
Big10": My laptop. Has a 17" screen too.
Hotgurll69: I thought we were talking about your 'Big10"'
Big10": Oh no, the Fantasy Goddess would kill me. Besides, the cock harness pretty much keeps it down to around 5"
Big10": Hello?
Big10": Are you still there?
Big10": What'd I say?

Here's what I've found out so far. And that cnet place April suggested is great.

It seems that for my purposes, super-duper, AV/broadcast/mulit-media/email cheker that the top-o-the-line Mac is the coolest piece on the planet - but, but, but, everything I have here at my desk and in my control room - is PC based so no-can-do.

After that it comes down to the schools of current lap-top design - the "I'm so sexy, slime, light and modern executive flying all over the place" school - and the "Killer, fast, 15" screen, long battery life with a whole bunch of options, but it's still pretty heavy and big" school.

I've got to go for the latter - I can actually burn CD's (steal stuff) A to B right in some of these sucker's.

There's this one company that's pretty interesting - Micron - you heard of them? Kind of like total custom - we'll put togerher any Ferrari like, mega-steroidal lap-top you want - but, but, but - you pay out the ass (I priced one, just one, up to almost $6K - fuck!) - and support would most likely suck and who knows - proably not that reliable either. Nope - no Micron in this kids future.

So - so far the contenters are: Fujitsu - Toshiba - Dell - IBM - WinBook and HP. Nearly all of these - when loaded up full bore - run right around $4K or better.

Still need to find out more about Lap-Tops and Video. Any clues? Websites?

Thanks all.
