i've got a live mc5 disc on right now. makes me wish i'd had the chance to see them. but i've seen some great live shows.

  • los lobos busting into a blues club late night and playing with the band
  • stevie ray vaughn doing his semi-regular gig at the continetal club before he broke out
  • townes van zandt at his last concert in austin before he died
  • the neville brothers playing amazing grace at 4 a.m. on easter morning
  • the del mccoury band playing inimitable bluegrass in the round
  • doc watson and david grisman swapping licks
  • junior kinmbrough defining north mississippi hills blues in his juke joint
  • a long-forgotten southern power-pop band--guadalcanal diary--with a bass player who kept time like a sledge hammer metronome
  • dizzy gillespie, cheeks filling like a bullfrog's, the quintessential cat
  • drive-by truckers, blurring the line between three guitar southern rock and southern gothic fiction

all different. all great. all vital.

who else kicks out the jams? what great shows have you seen?

The Talking Heads at the Orpheum in Boston with Adrian Belew on guitar

Bo Diddley and the Groovemasters at the Blue Parrot in Rhode Island

Toots and the Maytals

Nina Hagen

Lou Reed at the Paradise in Boston

Iggy Pop

Los Lobos is so fun live. Bet the others are or were too.

I've worked with The Neville's and they fight a bit. Nice family people though.

Rock on!

Haha I saw Gcanal Diary....way back when.

I think the best show I ever saw was REM at the Richmond Mosque on the Fables Of The Reconstruction tour. A show that has since gone down in legend. Michael Stipe used to be a peerless frontman; before he became an insufferable cunt and role-model for Moby.

The other top shows were by The Meat Puppets (twice!), Anne Arbor Stooge/Birthdaypartycore band The Laughing Hyenas, and Swiss electro pioneers The Young Gods. That's the real Top Five of a life spent in bars watching bands and thinking "meh.".

My all time fave band, Fugazi, was only so-so when I saw them.

I'd like to have seen the Bad Brains, LEd Zeppeling, The Birthday Party, etc.

los lobos has to be one of the hardest working most under-appreciated bands in america. they're great however you slice or dice them.

Tim Buckley at a little club in Philly. Saw Lou Reed there a bunch of times, too.

Jefferson Airplane in Central Park--a free Sunday afternoon concert after their Friday/Saturday Filmore gig. It was a be-in. :D

David Bromberg at a concert my friend put together.

The Band at the New Jersey State Fair.

King Crimson with Adrien Belew. I saw them other times, too, but I loved what Fripp and Belew did together.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band when I was far away from home. :)

There's lots more, but those came to mind first.

I've seen Bo Diddley a few times
shook his hand once, he has hands like canned hams by the way, the show in RI was the best.
Came out, plugged in his guitar, and his name lit up on it, and he played the star spangled banner
everyone stood up, and didn't sit down again for 2 1/2 hours

Iggy came out with the band, they all flicked their cigarettes at the audience and after about 3 songs he had his dick out.
as Ray Manzarek said " If I had a cock like that I'd show it off too"
He is only 5'1 though
kinda odd

you and ee are top-notch competitors in this game. :D

does bromberg ever play now?

Oh, I knew I was forgetting something: the mighty Rage Against The Machine at Meadowlands. Finest major label hard-rock band in 20 years.

awww.... I  Dave Bromberg.

Saw Los Lobos back in '83 or so for the first time as a Hot Tuna opening act at the Berkeley Community Theater. My first Talking Heads show wasn't until like '84/'86 I think. The was at the Berkeley Greek Theater. You don't need drugs to watch David Burn but we did some anyway.

pssst. i smoked weed with bromberg before the show. we knew a lot of the same people and there was a party. there's always a party. :)

he was very laid back--like his music--or um maybe it was our condition.

and i forgot Alberta Hunter. She was about 80 at the time and did a show at my college. She sang My Castle's Rockin and god bless her, it was.

now that was an inspiration to see.

WIth the Wu Tang Clan opening!!!!! They sucked, like all live rap I've ever seen; but still.

Most of my top shows have been about insane rock power. I like tunesmiths and singers, but they rarely move me live the same way. Cat Power was good. American Music Club was very good.

fishaholic was the soundman for Country Joe McDonald for a few years so we've done a few bowls among various friends ourselves ;)

bluegrass festivals ROCK! too

the energy from a really rocking band is different, no doubt about it. but i've seen some tight singer-songwriter stuff that'll blow you away, too.

steve earle can do that.

alejandro escovedo used to do a version of "i wanna be your dog" that would make your ears bleed.

dave alvin is pretty good at that, too. so is john doe.

You've all seen some great talent.

One of my all time favorites was The Kinks back 79-81 ish... can't recall the exact year.

Tag mentioned The Orpheum in Boston - a good spot for music, nice intimate seating. I've seen Hall and Oates, Bonnie Raitt and Squeeze there.

Probably the most impromptu jam I've seen was back in 2001... long story short, it was like a big storage place/bays - small businesses would use them... I was picking up oxygen tanks and heard some familar music. It was our local lovable boys - Areosmith. I just walked over and hung out a while, there were only about ten of us. It was a lot of fun.

I've seen Jimmy Buffett a bunch of times and Al Jarreau on the Boston Common.

I'm know I'm forgetting some but...
