This was shaping up to be a lousy fucking day for Shirley Ivers.
First, she had flubbed up her job interview. Then she had gotten home to find her ex was suing her. Finally the 33 year-old former business executive had decided to just go for a drive. Get out of the house, clear her head. That always helped her unwind, relax, and focus.
The first half of the drive had gone fine. Then she was homeward bound, but thirsty as hell. She saw a gas station ahead, decided she would buy a Coke and have one for the road.
As soon as she pulled in, she had second thoughts. There were some rough-looking characters hanging out. The place was poorly lit. But no, she thought, she had come for a Coke and she was going to leave with a Coke and in two minutes this place would just be a spot in her rear-view mirror. So Shirley went in, grabbed a plastic bottle, and went to the front. In and out. She got to her car, reached for her keys in her front pocket.
No keys.
Ah, shit, the woman thought. Other pocket, no keys. She looked around on the ground. In the meantime, some of the local wildlife took an interest in her...
