N.Z. actor who played Xena's love interest dies

WELLINGTON (Reuters) - A New Zealand actor who played the leather-clad, bicep-bulging God of War, Ares, opposite Xena in the television series "Xena: Warrior Princess" has died in China after a fall.
Kevin Smith, 38, died in hospital late Friday from head injuries he suffered in Beijing, where he had been working on a film production, the N.Z. government said in a statement.
Smith played Xena's love interest in the fantasy drama based loosely on ancient mythology, which ended filming in New Zealand last year after being broadcast in more than 100 countries.
The government statement paid tribute to Smith, saying he was "known not only for his enormous talent and amazing beauty, but also for his intelligence and self-effacing humour."
The New Zealand Herald reported Smith's next role was to have been in a Bruce Willis movie, "Man of War," to begin filming in Hawaii next month.

That does suck cause I liked him in that series. He was the perfect person to play Ares in my opinion. Just had all the right things going for him in the voice body type areas.

He was the reason I watched Xena ... whenever I knew he was going to make an appearance I would make sure not to miss an episode.... he made an amazing God of War ... he will be missed.

It sucks that he was on the verge of his big break too. I know that everyone knew him because of Hercules and Xena but he was better than just that one role.

He is one of the actors that will be missed. It just sucks.

Kevin Smith was an incredibly tallented actor who had the misfortune of being born away from the industry - ie. New Zealand. He was a star and a bloody good human to boot - screw you and your sigh of relief, a man is dead!

Kevin was a great actor and a person with a great sence of humor. He had a lot to offer that the world had not seen previous and that could of followed.

I meet the guy on a few occasions and he will be missed by many.......

Will be sorely missed among my female friends. I never did watch much Xena but when I did and he was featured I remember thinking to myself that he was an actor who would go far given the right role.

I also didn't realise he was to be in man of war. I hope his family is as well as can be expected and although none of them may read this my deepest sympathies go out to them.
