"I guarantee you somewhere in Kentucky today a child was sexually assaulted that was left at home because there was nobody there to watch them," the Republican governor told reporters Friday afternoon.
"I guarantee you somewhere today, a child was physically harmed or ingested poison because they were home alone because a single parent didn't have any money to take care of them."
Bevin went on to say that "some were introduced to drugs for the first time because they were vulnerable and left alone."
I'm sure, dear readers, you are wondering if this is some kind of Onion article where a public figure is written to say off-the-wall or completely nonsensical quotes. Sadly, this is not the case. Governor Bevin made the above comments as a result of Kentucky teachers and supporters protesting at the Kentucky capital.
What makes these comments so unbelievable, outside of the obvious, is it is Republicans who consistently deny women the right to an abortion and then, once the woman has the child, tells them they're on their own. No help from the state for a single mother to raise her child. That doesn't even touch on the fact that somewhere in Kentucky, every single day, a child is sexually assaulted, physically harmed, ingests poison or does drugs for the first time regardless of whether the parent is there or not. In many cases of physical harm, it's the parent(s) doing it.
Even further, his comments imply the schools are nothing more than babysitters to watch over children throughout the day.
About the only good thing to come of this is both sides of the aisle threw up their arms in dismay at the callous and demented comments. Republican state Sen. Max Wise, who serves as the chamber's Education Committee chairman, also had harsh words for Bevin's remarks.
"The disgusting comments by Gov. Bevin insinuating that a peaceful protest by teachers would lead to sexual assault are reprehensible," Wise said Friday on Twitter. "I don't agree with these comments & I find them repulsive."
