Ken Caminiti is a fucking idiot

This sounds like it came from The Onion, but it's true.

NEW YORK -- Ken Caminiti, the National League's Most Valuable Player in 1996, says he won the award while on steroids and that at least half of major leaguers use the drugs.

In a Sports Illustrated report on steroids in baseball, Caminiti confirmed he used them the season he batted a career-high .326 with 40 home runs and 130 runs batted in.

"I've made a ton of mistakes," said Caminiti, a recovering alcoholic and former drug user whose 15-year career ended last season. "I don't think using steroids is one of them."

Health care professionals have been very concerned over the long-term effects of steroid use.

Ken posed for our camera today while signing autographs at a Sports Memorabilia Convention.

Has anyone read the sports Illustrated report yet?

His ass was the highlight of many an Astros game when I was a pre-teen...

As outrageous as it may sound it's true....Jose Canseco has a book coming out in which he alleges that as many as 85% of probaseball players use them too...

FYI: Steriods is not illegal or against the rules that govern baseball. Of course it isn't, it's in the interest of all involved that players hit more homeruns, owners, players, managers, etc.

Steriods has been around for a long, long time has it not? I don't think ball players just found out about it now...

On the same note...it takes a lot more than strength to hit a round ball off of a round bat. Do steriods enhance ones agility and hand-eye coordination?

Just thoughts, that's all...fuel for the fire :D

Edited to say: Oh yeah, and Ken Camaniti was on my fav team for a year. He was a very, very hard worker and loyal teammate. He might not be bright but he struck me as a pretty decent guy, albeit with some foibles.

Zam, steroids are illegal if used without a doctor's prescription.

Yeah, but you have to at least give him credit for admitting it. I wouldn't have.

His MVP should be revoked, but, it won't.

The baseball players union is the strongest union in the nation, never losing, rarely budging. You can make the roids illegal in baseball, but the players won't let you have tests.

Given the upcoming strike (It's coming, sadly, both sides are being jackasses) this isn't a good time for this, it won't get addressed probably.

oh, and KenCam has been an idiot for a long time. Awful stint w/ the Rangers.

As much as I love baseball

...they continue to piss me off to no end.

How many times were Steve Howe, Daryl Strawberry, and a few other guys banished from the game for drugs, then allowed back in? Pete Rose gets caught gambling and is booted forever. Yeah, I know he's not too bright and wouldn't fess up. But the leadership is nonexistent. The latest edict to come out of the Commish's office is that umpires will begin enforcing an old rule to keep opposing players from talking to each other during a game.

Holy fungo bat.

Good God. I don't think I've ever seen a sport where players DON'T do that during the game.

Will you be back after the strike, Miles?

It took me untill about last year to really start watching baseball again after the previous strike. If they strike again, in the middle of August I think, then I don't know if i will watch again.

I'm a huge baseball fan, I don't think it's any secret. I don't want another strike, and quite frankly I don't know if there will be another one, but I'll lose some interest in the game if they strike again.

Yeah both sides are being asses, but I don't think that's really any big news now, is it?

I'm sure I'll still support my hometown team, but over the last few years anyway, I've gone to fewer and fewer games. With a new strike, I'll go to even fewer.

Ken is an idiot, who can't stand to be out of the spotlight. What's he got to lose anyway? He's already out of baseball, in 15 years he'll probably be dead from the effects of steriods on his body.

Baseball does drug test the players, but only for the "big" drugs, such as coke, pot, and a few others.

Steroids don't need to be in any sports, it's just a way to be able to cheat. You're not showing your true talent when you are taking them or any drugs.

Why is it that minor leaguers (For the most part) act more professional than the pro's? They go out, try their hardest, and they don't try to go over salary caps or bigtime the fans.

because more than not are playing fo rthe love of the game, rather than the love of hte money.

Once you make it bigtime, it's rarely about the game anymore.

Well said, and exactly right.

I used to love Major League Baseball. I've not been to a major league game in over six years. Now minor league games? I do a dozen or so a year. ;)

I'm sitting here in my office tonight/this morning, and to my right on the wall hanging on the wall is a framed proof sheet of one of my first sports card designs. It's for the River City Rascals minor league baseball team, just outside of St. Louis.

I got the job because I partnered with one of the players who made $600.00 per month, pitching for them. $600.00 per month times 3 months, is not a lot of money for a seasons income.

There's a difference. Gambling goes against the very nature of sport itself. And furthermore, the punishment for gambling is and always has been the most severe in baseball for decades. However, there is no evidence that Rose ever bet against his own team, so he should at least be put in the Hall of Fame.

As for the strike, I would actually welcome it. Unless Major League Baseball gets some kind of salary cap and revenue sharing plan in place, it won't be worth watching anymore. When only about half a dozen teams even stand a chance of winning anymore simply because of economics, there's a severe problem. However, I hope like hell that any work stoppage would happen following a World Series, so we don't have to go without again.

For a really great analysis of the problems with baseball, read Bob Costas' book, Fair Ball: A Fan's Case For Baseball.

Yogi, I was referring to the rules that govern baseball.

That doesn't make any sense. Why does the MLB outlaw the use of creatine and andro but not anabolic steroids?

You quoted me out of context. I also said Rose refused to admit he gambled, and to this day remains in denial. In my opinion if he's too stubborn to fess up knowing that he'll be let off the hook, he's got nothing to bitch about. The best out in the world is to say "I fucked up and it won't happen again."
