OOps! That was probably not a good idea.

JOHANNESBURG — An acclaimed outdoorsman who wrote movingly about testing himself against nature is presumed dead after a crocodile snatched him from his kayak while he led an American expedition from the source of the White Nile into the heart of Congo.

Two Americans being guided by 35-year-old South African Hendrik Coetzee on the grueling trip could only watch in horror. They paddled unharmed to safety after the Tuesday morning attack on the Lukuga River in Congo.

I read about this. I hate to sound cold about it, but occasionally some of these "adventurers" really do get what they have coming to them. How long have we known that man-eating crocodiles are a danger?

Oh, right. Forever.

A bit of Darwinism at work.

Sort of like the instances when I was working in embassies and we threw up every warning signal we knew of to tell American travelers not to go to a certain place at a certain time--and they did--and then their relatives were yammering on our backs about not getting them out safely.

As he paddled down the river keeping his eyes on the banks, he smiled as he saw the apprehension on the American's face. He laughed and said, "No gut's no Glo..SNAP!
