I can't open any files ending in the extension .gif

Why is that? It tells me to change the folder options on the view tab, change it to what?

How do I make it work?

Please, waiting patiently for help.

Thanks

For some reason, it is being directed to open a .gif in an inaccurate program. A .gif should be set to open in some sort of art, or graphix program, or usually, they can be veiwed in an internet type window. Don't know how to fix it though ;)

Drill around your hard disk until you find the file you want to open. Then, highlight the file and hold down the Shift key as you right-click it. A handy dandy pop-up menu will appear and in there, select Open With. Find the application you want to open the file with and then, make sure Always Use This Program To Open This Type Of File is deselected (or unchecked), then click OK.

Further info...

Fixing it could depend what operating system you're using - I'm assuming its a PC... then is it Win85, 98, ME, NT, 2000?

Check this out - http://www.toejumper.net/speed5/file5.htm

and

Windows ME - http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q262/8/08.asp

Windows 95 - http://users.hunterlink.net.au/~ddrge/win95/w95tips.html

Kymberly I hope this will help:

- double click "My Computer"

- on the tool bar choose "tools" and then "Folder options"

- Click the "File Type" tab, and you should get something like this:

http://home1.stofanet.dk/shakes68/folderoption.jpg

And if you're lucky you'll also the the GIF filetype there.

- then click the delete button, and close the window

- double click a gif file, and hopefully a window should pop up, asking what program you want to open it with, there you should choose the browser program you use.

lol ok I guess I'm the only one who thought that this would be about techno, as in the music, hehe. oh well =)

Perhaps I should write a song detailing the proceedure?

Drill around your hard disk
Don't worry, there's no risk
Until you find the file you want to open
Listen to me all you men and women

Then, highlight the file
It won't be a trial
And hold down the Shift key
Are you listening to me?

As you right-click it
Use your finger or your tit
A handy dandy pop-up menu will appear
Don't worry, have no fear

Once you're in there select Open With
Do this without haste, but forthwith
Find the application you want to open the file
This is truly worthwhile

And then, make sure - Don't be obscure...
Always Use This Program To Open This Type Of File
Deselect (or uncheck), then click OK
Now go ahead and smile

Funny - I had the same question from a friend yesterday as well... *smile*

I think all technical support should now be done in poems.

Sorry Lazer - BULLSHIT - Macs can and have been compromised - not by this particular threat - but by others.

And yes - there tends to be less viruses and worms that attack the Mac then there are for Windows system... but that is nothing to gloat about. The simple reason for that is that these assholes who write these virus' and worms want to cause as much damage as possible and their are lots more users of Windows systems them Mac systems - therefore, more damage.

If you really want security - fuck Windows and fuck Mac and get yourself a UNIX box.

Uhm... I got this thread confused with the virus thread - for that I apologize... but I think the point is still worth mentioning.

Additionally - fixing some of these things in Windows is actually quite easy and like anything else I recommend people read the "instruction manual" or look up the fixes online - its really quite easy.

The Mac does protect you from a lot of things... it also protects you from yourself - for better or worse - some people like that and some people like more control. It depends on what each person needs. I have 2 Macs and 2 PC's at home - there are advantages and disadvantages to both. While you don't usually have to do these type of fixes on a Mac its also true that when something does go wrong you have a hell of a time figuring out what it is - you get some dumb ass error msg's that mean nothing! *lol* (for example - not long ago with OS9 I kept getting a SCSI error msg - considering there is no SCSI chain on the system that's pretty damn useless!)
