DES MOINES, Iowa — An Iowa school district has apologized after using a quote tied to World War II Nazis as part of its morning announcements.

In an email shared with the Des Moines Register, part of the USA TODAY Network, the Indianola Community School District apologized for using a quote by Heinrich Himmler — a high-ranking Nazi considered to be the architect of the Holocaust. The quote "My honor is my loyalty" was the "Respect Quote of the Day" that was shared over Indianola Middle School's public address system and in an email to families on Monday, KCCI reported.

"This morning (Nov. 20), an administrative staff member accidentally posted a Respect Quote of the Day before checking the source of the quote," Indianola Superintendent Ted Ihns wrote in the email.

After January, 2025 any dissent will not be tolerated in the Fourth Reich of Trump. You will be sent to camps for the re-education and extermination of the enemies of the Reich. Sieg Heil!

See, this is where I have a problem with many of these quotes outrages. I see nothing wrong with that quote and would not equate it with evil if it wasn't pointed out. Sometimes words are just words and just because someone bad once used them should not bar them from current use.

Still, a school district should be more aware, but then they don't really want to teach history, do they?

Um, the person in charge obviously sourced the quote from somewhere.

There is no excuse for not vetting that garbage.

I agree with butters skepticism ; that was very likely no accident.

SAD!!!

it's exactly that whitewashing/sanitisation/disappearing of historical context that's so important here

as words alone, they carry no offense, but they can NOT be extricated from their nazi use given the current political climate...nor should they be.

That area is leaning DeSantis isn’t it??
Indianola is an affluent suburb of Des Moines. I don't know about the town itself, but the county it's in has been trending GOP in recent years. So you're probably right.

So you've NEVER tripped over your own feet and done something stupid? For my part, I've done it more than I want to admit so I ain't gonna verbally stomp on someone for screwing up.

This is EXACTLY the stupidass mindset that has us biting each other in the ass. It's EXACTLY the same kind of stupid crap Trumpers use. Rather than step back and look at it logically (is this an anomaly or is this a regular occurrence from this source?) it's blown completely out of proportion and pointed at like it was a burning cross on someone's lawn, when in fact it appears it's no more than a case of someone screwing the pooch.

There are oodles and gobs of examples of real assholery out there. This ain't one of them.

Um, I’m agreeing with being skeptical that it was an innocent oversight.

This is America 2023, where the rise in fascism is well documented.

Even those "innocent" kids who wear MAGA hats on school trips to the U.S. Capitol or “Don’t tread on me” patches on their backpacks, or join in organized midfield prayer groups at high school football games, etc, are fair game for scrutiny and skepticism. - So yeah, I’m suspicious, and skeptical that the HEINRICH HIMMLER quote was "accidentally" chosen as the quote of the day.

Sue me.

And if it was a mistake, then the person responsible for sourcing and vetting “the quote of the day” should still be held accountable for incredibly poor job performance.

Again, you've never tripped over your own feet? They apologized for it. What would you have them do genuflect to everyone while self-flagellating? It always astounds me how one side can call bullshit on the other while using the exactly same tactics.

I'm still conflicted though. There was another recent incident (maybe in the same general geographic area?) not too long ago. Even though it could have been completely innocent, you'd think they'd be more careful after the other one.

Um, where did I call for anything other that some sort of accountability??? Calling the individual who was responsible for choosing the quote on the carpet and having them scrutinized / investigated to see if they have a history of supporting white nationalism, etc, would be a fairly reasonable way to proceed imho.

It sucks that decent people have to be suspicious and skeptical every time one of these "innocent mistakes" happen, but, again, this is America 2023 with its documented rise in fascism.

No it would not. It would be a huge overreaction to a mistake, just like the reaction the Repubs have had to Hunter. Sometimes a fuckup is just a fuckup and not a nefarious, clandestine conspiracy to destroy the children of the country.

We just went through something like that here where I live. A friend who works for a local city was accused of stealing massive amounts of material. Instead of using some common sense and trying to figure out what happened, they went off the deep end, hired an outside accountant (at $500.00 an hour) to look into it and put my friend on paid leave (because they had no proof he took anything, but didn't want him to "influence" the investigation, how he would have done that no one knows) for months. A year after it began they found out nothing was missing. They spent literally thousands of dollars, put my friend through hell only to find there was nothing wrong in the first place. Something that could have been discovered with a few intelligent questions.

The same here. A couple of common sense questions would tell if there was a problem: 1) Has this kind of thing happened before? 2) Has other things been done that would lead one to believe this was planned rather than a mistake?
If the answer to both of those is a no, which it appears to be, then it isn't a conspiracy but a plain old fuckup and should call for no more than a verbal reprimand.

i'm sorry your friend went through that

i think the point of the article is 'ask those questions', and forgive me for not taking a hasty school apology at face value until i know what kind of history it has (or the person has). What it highlights is the need to have the questions answered and the need for better education regarding history/social media when it comes to quoting these things. A simple google search of the phrase would have highlighted its notoriety.

given the nationwide push to have those with maga-affinities placed in school positions, a push we've happily seen rejected this autumn to a large degree, makes me skeptical enough to have doubts. If i were the one investigating, i would be asking those common-sense questions and weighing the other 'evidence' justly. This is a forum where we can freely express our doubts and reason why in discussion.

Yes it is and I try to adhere to being civil when discussing things.

As far as needing better education regarding history/social events, everyone is going to do something akin to this from time to time. Because of the quick apology that came it seems it was an innocent mistake of ignorance and not intentional.

I am no stranger to putting my foot in my mouth, so I can't see getting all spun up about something that appears to be nothing more than a foo-pah. There are lots of other more serious things to prickle my back hairs. This one doesn't even show on the scale.
