Who decided which way is North and South? Next question. Why do we believe them?

Interesting. Kind of fucks up which way is east and west then. How about up and down? I would say I'm going back to be bed but am I going back to bed or forward to bed? OH shit. Where will it stop?

Wow.

I'm guessing God did that or at least he used references that man could understand when communicating with them.

( I should note that there is some evidence that North & South, and East & West may have not have always remained the same directions.)

Time to light up that fatty folks! :)

Dude, there ain't no such-a-thing as 'God'. Man made that up too, though nobody knows why. Maybe to answer the why questions when they can't come up with anything rational.

Now for a real question .....

Who decided that reed, read and reid should all be pronounced the same way? Or that read and red should be?

1.) God created Man so that Man could create God.
2.) Fucken Wagnalls.

Sigh.
How do you explain color to one whom was born blind? Or sound to one who was born deaf? I suppose maybe if you hit them on the head they might see burst of light...but I doubt it. Sometimes Sound can be heard by the deaf though vibration or maybe direct stimulation in the brain...

I'm not going to try to convince you that you that the god that gets the big "GOD" is real. Not my job, all I can do is to certify to you that I know that he is real and so is Jesus and the Angels.

It is said that a mans life is like thrusting ones finger into a pail of water and taking it out and that eternity is everlasting.

I have had some of the words and the awesome power of God brought to life not only in my presence several times, but through me and involving me.

Be as big a boy or girl as you want to be. After all, IT IS YOUR LIFE.

When ancient peoples wanted to navigate water or across featureless land, they used the position of the Sun and Stars.

The rising and setting of the Sun roughly defined East and West.

Many of the stars moved, but they noticed Polaris stayed in the same position at right angles to the movement of the Sun. The star Polaris defined 'North' whatever they called it at the time. Turning around so that Polaris was behind you defined 'South'.

The magnetic compass came much later but even early navigators using a magnetic compass became aware that it didn't point exactly North and South, and could be unreliable if Iron Ore was nearby.

That all sounds great. But who decided the sun rising and setting defined east and west? So are we back to square one? Maybe just a simple thing as going from here to there.

This thread is approaching National Lampoon Status.

Who decided to call East east and not West or Flubar?

Why doesn't the Sun rise in Flubar and set in Antigar?

The words for East and West are in English but they are derived from Norman French, itself derived from Latin.

In other languages, particularly those not rooted in Western Europe, the words are totally different.

But some people think that Jesus spoke the English of the King James Bible.

It's all arbitrary and traditional, like USA fuel pricing in 9/10 cents. But I digress.

We know the words for directions evolved variously in different languages. But what about the very concept of directions? I've heard that some languages only count "one, two, many..." -- no other numbers are used. Are there languages and cultures lacking anything like cardinal directions? That don't even distinguish dawn-ward from dusk-ward?

I read somewhere that some isolated cultures (Aboriginals, I think?) only did cardinal directions but had no concept of left and right until westerners came along and introduced it.

What happens if you are standing at the north or south pole? Does North, South, East and West cease to exist?

Who decided which way is North and South? Next question. Why do we believe them?

I forget his name but he went to the north pole and found the word north written there. Then he wondered what was opposite it so he went there and found a pole with south written on it. He took photographs and brought them back and showed them on social media and now you know.

What is north of the north pole? Is like, what was in place before the universe was created?

Very northern Europe egocentric. Even colonists to Aus kept North, up/South, down even with vastly different constellations.

What will we do when the magnetic field flips and the north pole becomes the south pole, magnetically speaking? New maps and compasses?
