Just what is it that makes you want to...

Wasn't that a catchy thread title? Something to spark your interest to see what's inside? I hope you won't mind that I've taken liberties with your curiosity.

But, now that I've got you in here, I'm curious. OK, I'm bored, too. But, I am curious. I'm wondering what makes a person want to post to a thread. I've seen many very interesting threads that have a lot of views, but few posts. And, I've seen some rather silly threads that have thousands of posts.

And, a lot of threads seem to thrive or at least survive as long as they're on page one. But, once they turn that corner, they are on a fast track to history.

So BDSMers, speak up...what intrigues you about a thread? What catches your interest? And, more importantly, what compels you to actually post?

Is it the ever so slight trickery that some threads employ, where you are made to post in a certain way (you must comply and because there are subs on this forum, they tend to enjoy being told what to do? :D) Or, maybe is it cute methods used to pique your interest enough that you want to participate?

Is it mental? Do you like your mind stimulated? Is that what gets you to post? Is it sexual teasing? Does that touch you in a certain way that triggers your fingers?

And, is it you just like to chat? And, if so, is there some topic you prefer to chat about, or someone you prefer to chat with that gets you to post? Is it a certain person's posts you enjoy reading and posting to, as if it's a conversation between friends?

Is it a combination of things? Your day is slow? You have a little time to kill? Can't sleep and waiting for the sun to come up? You need some stimulation to keep you going? Any and/or all of the above?

Or, God forbid, is it political in some way? Do you enjoy confrontation? Do you like to take a stand and speak your mind? Or maybe do you like to be put in your place and told to wait in the corner for punishment (well, that might be a yes for various reasons)?

This isn't a scientific query, and there won't be a test after. Well, if some of you subs want a test, see me after class. I'm sure something can be arranged. Although, there will be consequences, if you fail my tests. :)

I know specific answers are unlikely. And, some are going to say more than one thing compels them to post. I'm not looking for exacts here. I'm just looking for information. I'm info crazy. The raw data can then be filtered into something usable (oh...usable. I like that word).

No, this isn't a serious thread, but I do want to know what's in your mind. And, I just want to see what happens, too. Post as you will...and as you won't. But, if there is something, just what is it that makes you want to post to a thread? Hummmm?

P.S. Or, is it the long threads you don't post to, herhaps?

Good morning, pal.

I read and/or post to threads

*that have interesting or eye catching titles.

*that are authored by someone I like or whose posts always make me think (i.e. Shadowsdream, on both counts.)

*that have been posted to by friends or others whose posts stimulate me to think or entertain me.

*that I know are always gonna be entertaining in some way (i.e. The blurt thread.)

*that are new topics or topics that I need to be educated more about.

Hope you have a nice day off! I will but, I have lots of errands to run today, too.

I respond to the threads. If no response is deemed necessary, I will skip it. Now if you'll excuse, while I hit the submit button...

LOL, don't think it is any secret I usually go for threads that stimulate my mind, or are on a topic I am interested in or can add something too. While I dislike confrontation with a passion, it does not make me sit on my hands and shut up just because someone may not agree with what I think, do, or say. Doesn't seem to matter who starts the thread, be it friend, new poster, or someone who has made it clear in the past they don't agree with or like me....to limit myself by established criteria IMHO does just that, limits my opportunity to learn from and share with others, and I hate limits.:D I too am perplexed at times when I see good thread topics sink, but have come to realise what might not appeal one day, may in a week, month, year be hugely popular...like most things in life, I think it must be a matter of timing.

I enjoy threads that make me think, think and then think some more!

Any thread that makes me re-think my views or offers alternative opinins that i can explore.

I tend to try to sum up some point of view when the thread becomes intense. Its for my benefit, but I post th summing up for two reasons A)it may help someone else and b)if i have something wrong people can tell me so i can get my mind around it all properly.

Also read threads of people whose opinions make me think ~ Pure, Catalina, AA, RR. to name but a few.

I love threads that spark of discussion for example one about obesity and BDSM. If there is no answer it can drive me crazy lol.

I am ok with the odd hijack(have hijacked threads briefly, so I don't disagree completly with hijacks; they are part of conversation) but quickly lose interest if it goes on and on and on....

The down side of discussion threads is the can inflame people and I have seen people leave the site because everytime they post they are 'flamed'

You are right WD once a thread is off page one it does disappear.

We rely on AA and Catlina to bump old threads. Recently some of the ones bumped from 2002 or 2003 have been interesting to read.

I do appreciate these responses. Don't stop now. We're making head way!:)

Incidentally, AA, a new installment is coming out in a day or two.

not AA but Yay-ing anyway

I read a lot more than I post, believe it or not. It's just that some threads I have no experience or insight to offer so I don't say anything.

Usually it's the topic, sometimes it's the thread starter or who's responded.

I'm also guilty of hijacking sometimes, but I'm trying to do better.

I come here for BDSM, always have. I do, however, as evidence by this post LOL, skim the Cafe.

I don't post much anymore.

Hijacking drives me out of my mind. If a thread is filled with inane chatter and flirting, I will just close it and move on.

I lurk more often than I post.

LOL, are you sure we are not long lost twins?:) Now I know where my mind has disappeared lately!! ...the intention of setting up the Cafe initially was to make a place for the flirting and chatter so discussions could take place uninterrupted elsewhere, but it does not seem to have been as successful as intended...could it be we need to focus more on boundaries and respect? Just a thought...and before anyone gets upset, as usual I am not saying flirting and fun should not happen as it is part of making this place a community (and something most contribute to at some time or another, moi included), just that we are mindful of where it takes place and to what extent if in Talk so there is an area for anyone and everyone.

Like anelize says, if a serious discussion becomes a succession of posts which are nothing but hijacking, joking and/or flirting, it often deters people from reading on, thus discussion ends, often prematurely...and people have left the board for this reason (some of them being those others have remarked about missing their presence). Similarly if the board becomes filled with threads about full PM Boxes, and threads which are chats/flirting between a small group (2-4 at times) of people, it detracts for many.....and no this is not just me speaking this, I have had many complaints filling my PM box about these issues of late. There is no reason why people need to stop having fun, just maybe a need to be more aware of how our fun affects other people who are also part of this community. It is a great place to both learn and have fun, hopefully it remains that way.

Oh, by the way...thanks for all of the posters who were brave enough to give me answers. I know there are no true answers, it's all shades of grey. But, it's interesting to see what intrigues people.

EDITED to add...I'd like to hear more, if any one becomes inspired (or bored and needs something to pass the time).

Being new to the forums... err... ok, new to posting on the forums, I just can't make myself read posts that already have 50 or so responses. Too much effort just to find out someone already said the same thing I would have.

I came in here in the first place to learn. I don't have scads of experience to share, so I try to post in threads that mainly involve my personal opinion on things.

I agree with Reath, i too am new and read the topics that i think might actually apply to someone that is new and still learning. Going into some of the threads has prven pointless to me at this point as i do not know enough to contribute to the conversation. Like many, i lurk and read, only posting when someones words hit some kind of cord deep inside of me and i want to either know more, or show appreciation for them taking the time to ask or answer the questions that are swimming around in my head too :)

I understand completely. I am the same way on those long threads. You feel you have to read every damn page, so you don't post something someone else has already posted.

And, as someone else has mentioned, some of those posts are just giberish banter back and forth between a couple of posters, and that makes it even less likely you are gonna want to read through all of that.

Sometimes I just post what I want and forget about whether someone else has already snookered me. Then, like you, I sometimes just pass on it, completely.

Yes, I'm sometimes this way, too. Recently, there have been threads I posted to, because I had experienced what the topic was about, or was familiar with it and could offer my vast knowledge on the subject. And, I do have vast knowledge on some topics, if I do say so, myself.
Thanks, to the two of you, for answering my questions so well.
