Here's a preview.....
"Hey, stranger."
Mack recognized Renata's whisper in his ear right away, and he whipped around to see her. To his surprise and delight, he found himself being pulled down by her arms around his neck.
"Hey!" he laughed, and he wrapped his arms around her waist and picked her up off the floor. She gave a high-pitched squeal.
"How are you?" she asked after he set her back down on her feet.
"I'm good!" Too good, actually; he was almost giddy for seeing her. "You?"
"I'm getting by." There was a hint of melancholy in her reply, but she quickly covered it with a smile and asked, "What are you drinking tonight?"
"I'm drinking Crown and Coke, but you're mistaken if you think I'm letting you buy my drink. What are you drinking?"
"Crown and Coke sounds good to me." Renata slid into the stool next to him.
"Great!" Mack sat down next to her and ordered the two drinks. Then he turned to look at her. She hadn't changed much, for which he was very thankful. She still had that sexy, long red hair, and those stunning sea-green eyes. "You look fantastic, Ren."
She smiled. "So do you, Mack."
"Yeah, for a bald guy, I guess." He touched his hand to his ever-widening forehead.
"You aren't bald," she scolded.
Which was true. His hair was just beginning to tell the tale, but the outcome would be inevitable: he would be a chrome dome, just like his dad was. "Balding," he said.
She combed her fingers through his thinning curls. "Mack, you have this sexy Ed Harris thing going, so don't even think that that's important."
He looked at her and smiled. Man, she could melt his butter every time. "You still got it, Ren."
She smiled back. "I do, don't I."
He felt the urge to touch her in return, maybe just a quick brush of her cheek with his finger, or a surface stroke of her hair, but he didn't. Renata Dubois was still off-limits.
