Wow. Lately, a great deal of the new poems are from the "Non-Erotic" category. Of the new poems that ARE considered erotic, none of them have been given any awards...

Has anyone else noticed this?

What awards were you expecting them to win? There are monthly nominations for all categories, from where the year-end awards are chosen: 4 poems in total, one from each category. Non-erotic has had its nominations and its award in the exact same proportion as all others.

As for the abundance of non-erotic poems, that's normal. Non-erotic has overtaken Erotic years ago, in total numbers here at Literotica. Most authors who are serious about writing poetry here end up focusing more on poetry and less on porn, so erotism eventually take the back seat to whatever non-erotic themes that trigger their personal approach to writing poetry. More than half of the Erotic poems you see posted are by new authors, just getting started, and many of them as a one-time-only thing.

Perceptive, yet......

Nice observation Cleo_P, even if it is wrong. Like Lauren said, they all have awards according to category. But at least it does show that you are intent on putting in your views and ideas. Thanx!

Maybe she is referring to Hot ratings and/or Editor's choices?

If that's the case, the latter half of my response is still valid, I think. The average quality of erotic poems here is lower, because it is the preferred category by those who are attempting to write for the first time, as a curiosity.

In addition to that, the Hs come from reader-ratings, which as we all know are unfortunately almost entirely controlled by accolade-levels and don't always reflect the quality of individual pieces. Newbies have no accolades.

Lauren nails it nicely! Erotic poems are usually inferior for the reasons stated, and because, as interesting and popular as sex/love is, it is still just one topic, and it is very difficult to find anything new to say about it, or even new ways of saying what has been said so many times before. ~ I rate 'erotic' poems much more generously than 'non-erotic' just because it is so hard to write something new and interesting in the genre.
