I've been listening to Todd Rundgren since about 1973 or 74. Nearly 30 years later I still never tire of his work. I've seen him (and Utopia) in concert probably 7 or 8 times. His earliest work with Nazz was fantastic. His solo career afterwards ("Wizard, A True Star") and then the formation of Utopia and all the wonderful albums they did. Right up to his current incarnation as TR-1. Not a single disappointing album/cd or song. More than that - he's written and performed masterpieces - not just a journeyman but truly a genius... a Wizard... a True Star...

JUST ONE VICTORY

we've been waiting so long,
we've been waiting so long,
we've been waiting for the sun to rise and shine
shining still to give us the will

can you hear me, the sound of my voice?
I am here to tell you I have made my choice
I've been listening to what's been going down
there's just too much talk and gossip going 'round

you may think that I'm a fool, but I know the answer
words become a tool, anyone can use them
take the golden rule as the best example
eyes that have seen will know what I mean

the time has come (hold that line, baby)
to take the bull by the horns (hold that line)
we've been so downhearted, (get up boys)
we've been so forlorn {and hit 'em one more time)
we get weak (we may be losing now)
and we want to give in {but we can't stop trying)
but we still need each other {so hold that line, baby)
if we want to win (hold that line)

if you don't know what to do about a world of trouble
you can pull it through if you need to
and if you believe it's true, it will surely happen
shining still, to give us the will

we've been waiting so long
we've been waiting so long
we've been waiting for the sun to rise and shine
shining still to give us the will
bright as the day, to show us the way

somehow someday
we need just one victory and we're on our way
prayin' for it all day and fightin' for it all night
give us just one victory, it will be all right

we may feel about to fall but we go down fighting
you will hear the call if you only listen
underneath it all we are here together

shining still to give us the will
bright as the day to show us the way

somehow someday
we need just one victory and we're on our way
prayin' for it all day and fightin' for it all night
give us just one victory, it will be all right

And you picked the best song to illustrate your point, too.

Todd is the man.

Uh, wait, to avoid being taken out of context, that's Rundgren...*g*

Actually they used to say "Todd is God" - Rundgren, that is.

Okay, so we've got The Ramones and Todd Rundgren. Who else is in your CD player, Dill? Any Pixies?

Nope - no Violent Femmes or Pixies - sorry.

Rundgren was in my CD player yesterday as I ran on the treadmill. The day before it was George Clinton's CD "Smell My Finger" (Parliament/Funkadelic)... the day before that it was Pere Ubu... and lets see, recently, in no particular order - King Crimson, Matchbox20, Ben Folds 5, Pink Floyd, Prince, Moody Blues, Enigma, soundtrack from Something About Mary, The Beatles (Number One), Herbie Hancock, Spirit, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Timothy Leary's "Beyond Life" (featuring Alan Ginsberg AND The Moody Blues)

The Wheel

Some people say life's like a merry-go-round
I think it's more like a ferris wheel
'Cause sometimes you're up, sometimes you're down
Sometimes you just don't know what to feel

And just when you think you've got the game figured out
And you say you've had enough
The mysterious mad man with his hand on the lever
Don't seem to never ever want to let you off

You can't get off this wheel of karma
You can't stop the hands of time

Now I have a friend, I might have a few
Sometimes I think they just don't care
But I think sometimes they think the same thing of me, yeah
You might say we've got a problem there

You know we all got this habit
We like to talk too much
And that always tends to slow you down
But we never change direction
We just keep going round and round and round and round

And let me off this wheel of karma
Let me stop the hands of time

Seems like I've been around so many places
And I must have learned a lot of things
And although I ain't yet come up with a so-called answer
At least I think I finally learned how to sing

And there's just a few things I ain't got sorted out
Sometimes they make my brain get sore
Like if kids were left of all devices
Would they ever come up with a thing like war

Let us off this wheel of karma
Let us stop the hands of time
