In which all the characters are Vietnamese, and Americans are only nameless background figures.

I mean, it was their war.

IDK.
You should maybe watch The Killing Fields. That’s about as close as maybe you can get to your request. The backstory of Haing S. Ngor is absolutely amazing, inspiring.

I saw it -- different war, Americans didn't fight in it.

I know. I’m saying that’s as close as Hollywood is going to come to your request.
I'm just disgusted by how films like The Deer Hunter and Apocalypse Now -- even the really good Vietnam War films -- always portray it as an American story. The Vietnamese point of view is never presented.

Not a movie, but Philip Jones Griffiths' 1971 photojournalism book Vietnam Inc is pretty devastating. His captions to the pics in particular are very acerbic. It does present a good overview of both US forces and Vietnamese (southern; unsurprisingly he couldn't get much access to the VC)

It’s going to have to be an Indie film/filmmaker. Hollywood, IMO, isn’t going to green light a big budget movie where Americans are the losers and portrayed as the bad guys in the way you’re wanting. If the actors are speaking in English then that would be kinda demeaning by your standards, right? And IDK if Americans will want to read subtitles. Hollywood is still struggling to recover from COVID. Getting positive earnings is their concern. IDK. Just my opinion.

We already have Vietnam War films in which Americans are the losers and bad guys -- but the story still is about the Americans, not the Vietnamese.

Why is it on Hollywood to make these movies? Anyone can with a camera and a little money.

Movies are one of the most egalitarian forms of art to make.
