I recently changed my AV when I noticed that someone else was using the same pic I was (changed slightly in color and a signame added) and was just wondering what "rules" if any there are regarding AV's...

Is it ok to use a pic that someone else is using so long as it isn't identical?

Is it ok to "take over" old Av's from people that no longer use them themselves if you like them?

Is there any way of checking that you haven't accidentally used someone else’s AV?

These are just a few of the questions I have been wondering about - any help for this relative newbie on AV etiquette?

As far as I know there are no rules about using an AV that someone else has used in the past or is using.

It is more a matter of ettiquet ( sp?) I guess.
I choose my AV's carefully to try and express a part of my personality to others. I would not be " happy " to see someone just decide they like it and use it, but I don't own the image so I guess I can't say anything about it.

I agree. I think if you wanted to use an AV that has been used before it would be polite to ask the previous user if they mind.
