July 4th

Damnit GP

After everyone was so nice about Canada Day, I wanted to be the first to say...

Happy July 4th.

Lauren...

Portugal must have a national holiday of some sort. When do we uncork the Vintage or the vinho verde?

Ange...

I don't even want to think about a "National Day" for Joisey.

As always, respectfully,

darkmaas.

How come everyone else gets nice and I get *that*?

And I'll have you know that there are some good things about New Jersey.

1. There are farms and grass and trees and stuff there. And no the trees are not all stunted from Garden State Parkway induced fumes. They're nice trees. Some of them.

2. Bruce Springsteen is from New Jersey. And you dare not say a word against the Boss to me. Go listen to Thunder Road--it's a great song. Albert Einstein lived in Princeton for years. Walt Whitman's from New Jersey. Etc.

3. Jersey tomatos and Silver Queen corn are the best. And I'm having both tomorrow. Yum. :)

4. We have great pizza in New Jersey. I'm not having *that* tomorrow.

5. I'm from New Jersey (well originally).

And if you don't like it, fugeddaboudit. You're fugazy.

"Thunder Road" by B.S. was derived from the theme song of R. Mitchum's movie of the same name. At that time it was entitled "The Ballad of Thunder Road". - By the time he got to New Jersey, Albert E. couldn't even count his own change! (So he fit right in.) :p :D :p

Silver Queen corn is no longer even close to the best. Try some of the Illini hybrid triple sugar varieties.

Dmaas, baby...

Portugal has more national holidays of some sort than I care to count.

Ok, I'll count them.

25th of April - Day of Freedom (to celebrate the 1974 revolution that ended 48 years of military dictatorship and started the 3rd constitutional republic)

5th of October - Proclamation of the Republic (the 1st one, in 1910)

1st of December - Restauration of Independence (long story... in 1580 Felipe II of Spain turned out to be the legitimate heir to the Portuguese throne, but in 1640 the portuguese said fuck that and kicked them out again)

The real national holiday, though, is
10th of June - Day of Portugal (a.k.a. Day of Portugal, of Camões, and of the Portuguese Communities) (Luis Vaz de Camões, the most sublime figure in the history of Portuguese literature, author of the epic poem "Os Lusiadas", stands for Portugal in much the same way as Dante stands for Italy, Shakespeare for England, died in June 10th, 1580 (curiously, Portugal died with him - vide 1st of December - but both have returned). How many countries in the world have their national holiday in the day of their greatest poet?)

Sigh

Darkmaas is tired of living in a country with only only one National Holiday (although St. Jean Baptiste Day could be counted I suppose). And our national poet is Sarah Binks, who turns out to be fictitious. It's sooooo demoralizing.

Enjoy the festivities.

The day of S. João [Baptista] is a municipal holiday in Porto. The night of S. João (23rd to 24th of June) is, undoubtedly the biggest festivity of the year, with huge fireworks displays and everyone celebrating together, downtown, by the river.

I never knew...

St. Jean is the patron saint of Quebec and his day is the Fete Nationale de Quebec. Razz Rajen is from Montreal which most days considers itself a part of Quebec so....

Razz, mon 'ti gar de Montreal, a reason for celebrating St. Jean Baptiste. Next June we'll get together with la belle Lauren and wait for the fireworks. I'll bring the beer. Kate can chaperon. Who can we get to maybe jump out of a cake?

Don't look at me, last time there were cakes around, someone put my wooden little bones a little too close to the candles (almost toast )

Not true, and it's not a nice joke. Just imagine that for one week you'd have Einstein's brain.

Einstein didn't have to count his change. He or rather his secretary never knew how much money was on his account because businesses around would not cash Einstein's checks. They kept them as souvenirs.

He spent his last years at the Institute for Advanced Studies (in Princeton, New Jersey). Years later I lived there, at the Institute, on the Einstein's Drive, in 1973/4. Still years later my own student from the past, from back in Poland, lived in the same house on Einstein Drive for another year.
