Oh my, goddess. I had heard about Matthew Shepard but never took the time to learn about the story, or his life, or the aftermath or anything. Now I'm holding back tears and it's just sad, and I only use that word because I'm too horrified to think of anything more expressive. I live in the Bible Belt and I'm scared to tell anyone I don't trust with my life, literally, that I'm bisexual. I can't even begin to imagine what the gay and lesbian population have to deal with here. I'm a skinny, pale, Gothic kid so I've already got an 'ambiguous' style of dress and plenty of 'fag', 'freak', etc. comments get thrown my way. Most of which I blow off with a finger raised defiantly in the air and a hearty 'FUCK YOU!'.
However, there are times when I am alone and get those comments from large groups of ignorant, gay bashing, hateful rednecks. I've actually been followed to my truck once by a group and was threatened with my life the whole time and was only saved by the passing patrol of a Montgomery Police Department. It was the single most terrifying moment of my life and that night I vowed to never again travel alone without knowing that I would have friends with me.
I wish that the Federal Government would enact a law to protect gay, lesbian, bisexual, intersexed, and transgendered peoples. They have laws to protect everyone else so why not us? The APA doesn't say that homosexual tendencies are a disease anymore (as if they were to begin with) and we certainly are a minority among the population. Laws to protect the gatherings of bigots, racists, fascists, and everyone else so why is it so hard for groups that support us to get permits. It's because, and yes I am saying this so flame me all you want, those *expletive expletive expletive* evangelistical Christians have got Pres. Bush by the ear and by the balls.
"Let's fight terrorism abroad to stop it from getting here." He says, and don't get me wrong I support the President and think he's done a great job with handling the post Sept. 11th situation... minus the slight degredation of civil liberities and this new intel flub the CIA has made. But here's an idea, let's try stopping terrorism at home with groups like the neo-Nazis, KKK, and state militias before we go off to fight someone elses war! I'd love to have kids one day but if this country stays in this shape with the way we treat each other then I'll just have a vasectomy and save some poor, innocent child the trouble of living a life in hell.
Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go get a box of tissue and clean off my face from the tears and say a quick prayer to the Goddess and God in honor of Matthew and for his mother that her cause, and ours, succeeds while we're still alive to witness it.

I wish that it did not take death for people to see how utterly ridiculous the are. And i hope, for every child out there who grows up to be DIFFERENT, that they have a mother like Judy Shepard or someone who is willing to fight for them. She is One very strong lady.
