Anyone watch it last night? It was a great bio-pic and cautionary tale about poor Judy Garland's battle with being overweight, dealing with diet pills, and the body and soul damage done to her by people who kept telling her she was ugly.

Did you notice that every commercial break featured an ad for shampoo, PMS medication and other products for women who would also like to buy into the media lie about female appearance, including, believe it or not, ads for DIET PILLS that cautioned possible addictiveness?

Is the entire world insane?

I did watch the movie and thought that the first actress looked very much like Judy Garland, didn't you?

I never knew much about her and didn't realize she was so addicted to pills. Her mother reminded me of McCauley Caulkin's dad.. ha!

I didn't notice the commercials though. I suppose they thought a bunch of neurotic overweight unhappy lushes were watching, eh?

:)

My best friend started watching it but the commercials irritated her. She couldn't believe they would actually have those on during this particular movie. Goes to show what they are really concerned with doesn't it?

No, DCL. Just gullible -- we believe that spew, and pay big bucks for the Cure.

I'd be willing to be that the advertisers were hoping that no one noticed the cautionary part of the tale. They hoped everyone was getting the message that she got into all that trouble because she was fat and unattractive and didn't have the benefits of the modern poison to cure it.

Shit...I knew it was a bad idea to let him come here and play.

Yes I watched the movie...the actress is doing a wonderful portrayal....well in my opinion anyway ...it's not as if I actually knew Judy Garland.
I did notice the commercials......But those same ones are always on...I guess as a woman I tune them out.

I wouldn't have noticed it myself if it weren't SO blatant. Every single break had at lest three or four spots aimed directly at a woman's vanity. But the one that truly got me was the Diet Pill ad that came on directly after a scene of Judy collapsing from an overdose of, um, DIET PILLS! I mean, isn't that a bit like the NRA advertising during a TV movie about Columbine?

Judy - Judy - Judy

oh yea i watched the movie ... i did not notice the commercials though ... you make a very good point ..

i love watching stuff about the 40s ...

do you think that was really Judy singing? .. it sure sounded like her ..

I don't think i am going to watch Part II tonight though ... i much prefer the "younger" Judy Garland phase...

Well DCL.......

:p

I hate all commercials, anyway, but something has to pay the bills. I thought the movie was fairly well done, I have adored Judy Garland my whole life. I think I have read just about every book ever written about her. The actresses did a good job, I don't know that I would want to try to portray a legend. I think the singing is actually Judy Garland, no one else has that kind of voice. Liza comes close, but this movie is Lorna Luft's show all the way. I have to work tonight, so will tape Part 2, then will take it to the high school to have the commercials edited out.

The singing was Judy's own. The girl playing young Judy was phenomenal, and Judy Davis was as amazing as ever (I think she'll be even better as the older, more doped up Judy).

One thing I didn't like aobut the bio-pic was the overuse of uneccessary full-name-dropping. Judy complains to Minelli that "Gene Kelly" has better costumes. Can't she just say "Gene"? Did she think Vincent forgot who Gene was, and had to remind him by using his full name? That happened all through the film, characters using the celeb's full names in private company. Annoying.

Otherwise I thought it was pretty danged good.

Isabella

yes, it was Judy's voice. They dubbed her voice into every song so as to authenticate the bio. I thought it was pretty well done.

Is the second half on tonight?
