Anyone know how to open a jpeg file that is saved in your pictures - what program should I use, Ive tried all of them and still cant open it.
Thanks

JPGs are pretty standard-format pictures - most programs should open them. Have you tried using your web browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape, Mozilla, etc)? Even Microsoft Paint should open a jpg with ease. If you're still not sure, try downloading Infraview (it's free). If you still can't get it to work, maybe something's wrong with the file? Not sure.

It's IranView from www.irfanview.com

One question: Is this just a problem with one picture, or all JPeg images? If it's just one image, then the image is probably corrupt and should be deleted.

Another good program, although not a free program, is PaintShop Pro from JASC Software there is a thirty day trial version availbel for download at www.jasc.com

Both PSP and IrfanView can set the file asociations for all of the image types they can handle so that you only need double-click on the icon to open them.

What happens when you try to open it?
You must get some dialog with an error
msg or the windows dialog that asks what
program to open with etc..

If the .jpeg is not opening, the file association has most likely, somehow, been screwed up on the PC. i love Irfanview and have used it for a long time, however, it's a better idea to simply solve the issue of file disassociation. i'd download Irfanview just the same, as well. "Give a man fish, he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish and he will eat for a lifetime." Installing Irfanview will open the .jpeg, but may not fix the actual image association issue.

Right click the .jpeg file & select 'open with' (you don't say which windows operating system you are using ..) then select the program there (for it to be opened by) or if the option is available (it is in XP) select 'choose program. If it allows you to choose the program, select windows paint/microsoft paint (or any other graphic program listed there). In that window which lists the various programs, note the option below which says 'always use the selected program to open these types of files', check that/select that option to correct the issue.

Irfanview an PaintShop Pro both will actually FIX the file associations by picking up the associations that you want those programs to use -- unlike some programs that simply grab all of the file associations without asking.

When Irfanview is installed, it will ask if you want the file associations updated to use IrfanView, or you can go to the options menu and do it manually when the installtion disk for a new camera or scanner grabs them all and assigns them to the ineffetive piece of garbage bundled with the new hardware.

I hope Harold is around, I know he is the computer guru around here.

Okay here is my problem, I have pictures that were sent to me as jpegs. I copied them into my pictures, I have reduced their size to fit 150x150 for AV's, now when I go to open the picture to change the av, it says its an unvalid jpeg or gif file- It is saved as a jpeg and was origionally a jpeg, how do I see that it is actually a jpeg forsure?
If it comes up as a jpeg would it not be a jpeg?
Im sorry if Im being stupid about this but its pissing me off! lol

There are different kinds of JPeg files -- the aatar function may not recognise one tha conforms to the newest revision of the JPeG definition.

To find out all there is to know about an image, use the Image Information function in Irfanview.

Open the image with Irfanview and click the small 'I' in a circle at near the center of the toolbar.

I tried to tell you on MSN that you basically just need to open it. But another easy way is to just copy and paste the image. Works all the time.

But I think it's something in your program, because jpeg is one of the most common image files and as I said, I KNOW it works in photoshop.

Hello Ravin,

I didnt get that info from you on MSN , everything was blank so I figured you had left.

I have it copied and pasted into my pictures, the problem is Lit isnt recongnizing it as a proper jpeg or gif. I dont want to install Irfanview , hubby is getting ticked with everything else I down load with everything the kids down load.

This does have me baffled, hubby suggested getting help from my teacher at school but, I dont know how the 25ish male teacher would react to me a 37 yr old mom bringing a picture of a hot female ass that says 'fuck me' on the cheeks to school to get formated! lol

What program do you use to view/edit images then?

I think if you get your hubby to check out IrfanView, he'll download it for you. It really is the best solution to managing images on your computer -- and conceivably allow him to remove some of the other programs you have on your computer for dealing with images.

There is more to converting/saving an image as a JPeG file than simply renaming it -- it's the strucure of the fle that makes it a JPeG file, not the .JPG extension.

Another possibility to consider, is that when you "Save As" to convert an image to JPeG, you're usually creating a COPY of the image, and many image editing programs default to their own directory for saved images so that you have to browse for the directory than you really want to put the copy in so you can find it to upload it -- are you absolutely sure that you're trying to upload the edited image instead of uploading the same unmodified image each time?

Open the image again, choose Save AS from the file menu, Select JPeG as the file type, and Rename the Image something you can't mistake for the original. (I generlly rename things I'm going to upload with a name that starts with "!" -- that' so it will alphabetize first in the list when you Arrrange Icons to sort by name.)

Hi Harold,

Thanks for the info, I think I tried that but will try it again to make sure.

I had no problems copying and editing jpegs with the program from my digital cam. HP Image Zone, but since I downloaded the new adobe photo elements 3 it doesnt work, dunno whats going on now.

I cant seem to work on HP without adobe opening up, I have a hard time working the adobe so far and much rather use HP until I know more about the adobe program.

I will try what you suggested and let you know how I make out with it, thanks for all your help!

Aha!

Adobe products have a few quirks that make resizing and converting images a good bit more difficult that they need to be. Make sure you're changing the Canvas Size as well as the Image Size. You may also need to use File/Export instead of File/SaveAs.

If you have MS Office, you probably also have MS Photo Editor. Resizing in MSPE is much more straight-forward than with any Adobe product I've used. Open MSPE and use the File/Open menu to open the picture instead of just double clicking it -- then use File/Save As to save an avatar sized copy of your original picture where you can find it.

This would be a whole lot easier if you would just come here and do it for me! lol

I did check it out yesterday and went to reply but got cut off. I saved it as you said for me to, still the same old thing. So now I will take a look after the kids go to school (picture is just a tad naughty!) to see if I can find the MSPE.

Thanks for all your knowledge Harold, you are a genious!

edited to add, I checked to see if I had MSPE, and I dont, I have excel, languages, office, word and powerpoint.

If I did, the first thing I'd do is download Irfanview. :p

If you have the MS Office CD, you need to run setup again to add/remove components and add, "image editing support" to MS Word, IIRC.

Depending on the version of MS Office, MSPE isn't part of the default installation, but you may be able to install it separately or (as I had to do with Office 97) install it as image editing support for MS Word.

Seriously, I know you dont want to download IrfanView, but it really IS the solution to image conversion and resizing problems because I know that what it saves as a JPeG file will meet the size and format version requirements of Lit for 99.9999% of images with the default installation settings. AND it's apparent that you don't have or can't figure out the proper sacrifices and incantations to make what you do have create an avatar Lit will accept.
