The underdog Baltimore Orioles completed their stunning four game World Series sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers, besting Sandy Koufax (it would turn out to be the last game of Koufax' career) and Don Drysdale. The final three games were all shutouts (6-0, 1-0, 1-0). To this day, the Orioles maintain possession of the World Series record for holding the opposing team scoreless: thirty-three (33) consecutive innings. Moe Drabowsky set another still-standing World Series record in game one when, in relief, he struck out six consecutive batters.
The team featured three future Hall of Famers (Brooks Robinson, Frank Robinson, and Jim Palmer). For a young, wide-eyed teenager whose only knowledge of major league baseball had been a decade of Yankee dominance, 'twas a very, very sweet day.
Brooks Robinson and Frank Robinson were wonderful role models. In a city which had all-too-recently been segregated, their combination of quiet dignity, modesty, and virtuosity stands in stark contrast to the ill-mannered, spoiled, absurdly overpaid, and boastful louts of today. Brooks and Frank let their play do all their talking.
