It just struck me what a small word 'joy' is.

I guess 'gay' was another one, but that no longer has it's original meaning.. or at least you can't use it as such without getting sniggers. I am not sure I remember exactly what gay meant, beyond 'cheerful'. Whatever it meant we now need a longer word as if for a less common and more complex subject.

But back to 'joy'. I feel it is too rare in erotica. Just as tales may portray just the mechanics of sex, and become porn, tales that only have lust and release and triumph are portraying just the mechanics of emotion...?

I think joy is what I have missed in several stories I have read. Maybe joy is more complex than it once was. If we don't turn it around soon, we may require a longer word.

Speaking of small words, think of the importance of No. Just two little letters, but think of a world without No's. A world containing tons of stuff, telemarketers would sell to everyone. Sex on demand. Very complex negotions for salary.

"Joy" and "No" are both important.

BUT, no word carries more weight than "Not". After all, backwards it spells "Ton". Just think what it'd be like if when Chuck Heston was up on the mountain getting the ten strokes, he'd left out that little three letter word "Not".

They'd be tearing it up tonight in the bible belt. Jerry Springer and Jerry Falwell would be brothers is arms. It's mind boogling. RF

Even if we had no word for no, we still have icy silence, the smallest statement of all. People that say silence gives consent are pretty close to those that think powerlessness also is equivalent to concent. I doubt they honestly think silence-while holding-a-significant-weapon gives consent and this reveils their hypocracy.

But I am not talking about the importance of little words. I am saying that I often read about lust, passion, and orgasmic release without any sense that joy is involved. I don't think pleasure implies joy. They are different like grunting and grinning are different.

I guess I will go and have a look at that tale, but not right now.

Its long, but I think the ending is joy, a small word with a great feeling..

It did have feeling, and I did like it, but the emotion I inferred from it was lonelyness.

I think that because in order for there to be true joy as a result of sex, there must be love. Most of the sex stories here don't include that as part of the plot. The audience here wants it hot and rough and fast, for the most part, so that's what writers write. That's not to say that there aren't stories here that celebrate the elusive joy to be found in the physical expression of love. They are here, but not as popular. :)

Love is probably too broad a concept. I think there is an entirely physical yet not necessarily sexual love which we experience as euphoria. Something to do with family and belonging or finding your place, and empathy when you suddenly understand part of somebody elses experience.

:p A little piece of trivia - Irish Gaelic is the only language in the world that does not have an unqualified NO as part of its vocabulary.

:p :p :D :D Just thought all you fellow wordsmiths might like to share that.

Very interesting... how is it expressed then?

Rexfelix,

They express no by using a number of words to say what every one else has one word to say. Phrases like - "I do not think that would be a good idea." or "You would not want to be doing that."

Like I said just a piece of trivia !!!!!!
