A top secret branch of the American military was set up to attempt to open wormholes, or portals to other dimensions in order to expand their supply of resources for growth. A natural tear in the fabric of reality was discovered near New York, New York boosting the branch's success of being able to harness dimensional travel. After a few months a facility was built which would allow them to travel back and forth in the tunnel. Two probes were successful at finding a stable point to run the first travel trial between the current dimension and another. The dimension was had been discovered lead to a prehistoric world finding with many dangerous creatures..

Jared Rhinehart was born in the year 2078. Strict population controls had been in place to where families could only have one child. However his parents broke the law by having two children and both was taken away, placed in an orphanage. Despite the dire conditions, Derek remained happy and always had an eagerness to learn all he could. Feeling the need to get away from the static situation of the orphanage, he enrolled into the military at the age of 17, the earliest they allowed. He was hand-picked as a scout for the top secret program, nicknamed Line Runner. He spent most of his time learning everything he could about the job, improving his skills as much as he could. His dream of exploring finally came true when the Rift was discovered, becoming the first to volunteer for the maiden voyage through the Rift.

-----------------------------------------
March 5, 3020

Derek took a deep breathe as he looked at the glowing green pool of energy ringed by a metal circle at the end of a very long walkway. Though he was only a short distance from it, the pool looked very large to him. He was going to be the first human to go through the portal and he only had a vague clue of what to expect. The air was supposed to be clear of pollutants, and a much cleaner world overall. He shook his head for a moment and turned to go through the supplies that had been packed for him to take.

A battery-powered quad was the standard for exploration missions like his. The quad was built light, able to carry two passengers if needed. Attached to the quad was small trailer with enough supplies for a week. MREs, a two man tent, hammock, three uniforms, two flashlights with multi-colored lenses, spare battery for the quad, a solar-powered battery charger, various tools, and a portable radio were stashed away neatly inside. Painted on the side of the small trailer and front left bumper was the Line Runner's symbol, a red sword within a light brown circular gear.

With everything was in order, he double-checked his personal equipment. His uniform was a digitized pattern of multiple shades of green on the top and pants. A small palm-size computer was in his right breast pocket while the rest of his other pockets were empty. He wore brown-colored body armor which was woven with materials which could turn aside any bladed implements and stop any caliber bullet up to a 7.62 round. His standard issue side-arm was a sonic pulse pistol, housed on his right hip in a jet black holster. An electronic pulse rifle was slung across his back, equipped with a black vinyl sling. Hanging from his waist was a sheathed ten-inch combat knife with a titanium-carbon steel mixture blade, and two pulse grenades. A full camelbak of water was slung over his back, the drinking tube clipped to the front of his vest.

"Everything is set for you to move out Sgt. Rhinehart."
"Roger, moving out."

He took a sip of water as he tapped the comm-piece in his ear to turn it off. He took another deep breathe as he climbed onto the quad, feeling a mixture of dread and excitement at what he would find beyond the portal. It would be interesting to feel what actual wind would feel like blowing his short brown hair. He gunned the engine and moved forward towards the portal slowly, it's surface barely rippling. The quad had just made it into the portal when the entire system surged with an energy spike. Physically, nothing happened that John noticed, but the surge had caused the rip to shift into a completely different dimension for several seconds. The passage was successful for John and his equipment, but he was cut off as the rip resettled itself to the right dimension.

The first thing Derek noticed was the smell and taste of clean air. The sound and feel of the wind was soft as it blew past him. He stopped the quad where he was, sitting somewhere in a forest. Sunlight shone down through the canopy, feeling warm on his face. He pulled his Kevlar off of his head as he looked around carefully with his brown eyes. He was silent as he listened to the various sounds of the forest, trying to take it all in. He turned his comm-piece on, but only heard dead silence. He frowned as he spoke softly.

"Where is the probe?"

Sharandria had seperated from her hunting party, and begun to explore a section of the forest none of them had ventured into thus far. For lack of better terms or knowing this areas true name they simply called it the ancestors had called it The Darkend Woods.

There were many tales told of beings entering it never to return. Animals who were double the size they should be, and of corse the usual tales of witches and ghosts..

Sharandria unlike most of her kind had a curious nature which for a tracker and huntress wasnt always a good thing. She had been wondering for a good long while just thinking of turning back when the feel of the air currents shifted and changed.

She changed directions heading twords the disterbance. It hadnt lasted long but .. several birds took flight and the sound a sound she had never heard before filled the air it was like nothing shed ever heard.
Her heart pounded. What kind of creature lay just ahead through the bush.

What ever it was it had stopped she moved forward cautiously drawing an arrow and notching it in her bow as she went keeping to the shadows behind trees as she made her way close enough to see it without being seen.

The sight that met her very much confused her, she had nothing to compair it with.. it was similar to a centaur but... was unlike any she had ever seen... it had 4 legs but its upper body was centered at the middle of it and appeared to be human like but with all it had on it she couldnt decern a sex.

She watched quietly to see what it would do.

Taking one last look around, Jared climbed off of the quad to stretch his legs for a moment. He laid his Kevlar on the seat before opening a side compartment on the quad. The images the probe had sent back were of a coastline, and somehow he had ended up in a forest. He didn't understand it, but he knew he needed to figure it out soon.

After a few moments he pulled out a laptop, opening it up and setting it on the edge of the quad. It took a few moments to boot up before he found the program he needed. It was a sonar mapping program which he could also use to send a signal to the probe.

"Now where are you?"

Thinking he was alone, he continued to speak aloud, trying to figure things out. Several sweeps with the sonar and he had a decent picture of the forest within a half-mile radius, but no sign of the probe.

"Really? You're going to make me hunt for you by hand?"

What was this.. this.. a Demon?..

Sharandiria climbed up one of the trees keeping out of sight as she watched it seperate and remove part of itself. Six legs now..? no as she got a better view from a higher vantage point she reolized it was a human.. riding a strange beast.

That was a little less scary, what was he.. or she.. doing? she wanted a closer look at that flat black box it pulled out. Part of it glowed.. Magic?.. a magi then?.. she couldn't see what the being was doing with it as its back was to her and it was infront of the object.

She heard his words then and froze almost falling out of the tree thinking he had been speaking to her. Holding her breath she waited for sevral heart beats. The voice indicated the sex of the being was Male.

The being was dressed strangely in clothing she had never seen before.. its wepon's or what she thought might be wepons were also the likes of which she had not viewed previously. Who was this and why had he come here..

Were there more?..

She remembered the feel of the air currents shifting and tearing an unnatrual feel as if being pulled apart and then pft.. shifted back again there was still a faint feel..

she closed her grass green colored eyes a moment raising a lightly tanned colored hand in the direction the rift had occured as if feeling for damage.

What ever had caused it had sealed the section with out damage but left a faint residue... opening her eyes she rubbed her fingers together and looked down at her hand a shudder corsing through her. Lowering her hand she looked back to see what the male was doing now.

If he didn't find the probe within half a mile of his current position, Jared knew something went wrong. He wasn't sure what, but he would figure it out. He looked around the area for a moment before closing the laptop. A small section looked like a perfect place to hide the trailer while he went off in search of the probe.

He got back on the quad, the vehicle starting up with a soft vibration. The area he had chosen was just big enough to fit the trailer, and just enough room to pull out the quad. After unhooking the trailer, he opened the back of the trailer. Pulling out a large mesh camo netting, he pulled it carefully over the trailer. Though it looked slightly out of place, he doubted anyone would find it out in the woods.

He was about to get back on the quad when he stopped. He frowned for a moment, glancing around as if he felt someone watching him. After a moment he chuckled.

"Must have been my imagination."

Sharandria was torn between following him and her curiosity about what he had hidden or tryed to hide. She watched him go and jumped down from the trees.

She stood 4ft 5 inches weighing 110 pounds she was slender with an hour glass shaped figure and a well toned form. Her hair a teal blue in coloring.

At her right hip was a short sword, in her right boot a dagger. Over her sholder a quiver of arrows. Upon her feet were soft leather boots, round her waist two pouches one for healing herbs and medicans the other for gold, silver and copper coin. in her hand her bow.

The clothing she wore was soft brown leather leggings and vest with a soft cotten white shirt beneath it. However all of this save her bow and quiver of arrows were hidden beneath a large hooded cloak.

She knew he would most likely not be gone long. So would needs hurry. Some how he had known this area was here tho ? how ?.. was the slender box some sort of locater magic?

She approched the cover and things under it cautiously, Using the end of her bow to lift the net and jump back just incase.

When nothing happened she moved closer once again and began holding up one item after another wondering what they were and how they worked.

He took his time in his search, using a grid search. To make sure he wouldn't get lost, he marked certain trees with tape in the form of an x. He was careful, making sure he missed very little. It took him a little over half an hour, but his efforts were futile. There were no signs of the probe, which disappointed him.

At this point he could keep searching or give up. Either way, he had no idea what was going on. Deciding to return to the trailer, he followed his marks back to the trailer.

He stopped a few feet away when he noticed movement at the trailer. He quietly shut the quad off before getting off. He unslung his rifle as he approached slowly, pointing it towards the intruder.

"What are you during with my stuff?"

Shrandria had paused tilting her head a she listened thinking she heard the aproch of that strange beast, but after a moment of listining went back to looking over the items she had discovered. The item she currently held in his hand and had been looking at was a small round green thing with a small lever like grip handle and an o ring attatched to the top.

She froze as the male spoke the voice coming from behind her. Damn she was being careless and had lost track of the passage of time due to her curiousity. Food rations still in packages and verious other things were scattered about.

Slowly she turned to face the direction the voice was coming from. She didnt recgonized the weopon he had pointed at her but she did understand that it was a wepon. Her hood hung low enough and shadowed her face so it wasnt seen clearly and hid most of her body as well, leaving only her feet visable unless she walked forward or moved it aside to pull her sword.

" mearly a curious passer by.." she said in the human tounge as that was how he had spoken. " what are these things.. ? what and who are you ?.. a human but clearly you ride a strange beast.. a magi ? "

He blinked for a moment hearing and understanding what the stranger spoke. He hadn't expected to be understood in this new place, let alone be answered in the same. Even though he couldn't see what the stranger looked liked, he thought she sounded female from her voice.

It took him a moment to see what she was holding in her hand. He didn't know what she had asked him about being a magi meant, but what she was holding was a more pressing matter. He held a hand towards her from his weapon, Palm towards her.

"Easy there. Why don't you put that down carefully, before we both get hurt."

He made a motion with his hand to lay it down. He glanced around for a moment to make sure none of her friends were going to show up as well.

This? " she asked seeing the worried expression on his fetures as he motioned for her to put it down. Such a small object to cause so much worry she shrugged. " if it means so much then i shall do as you ask." She reached back into the trailer and set it back down with the others.

Turning back to him she noticed his looking around. He was right to do so normally the other members of the hunting party would be looking for their missing member however they were used to Sharandrias wonderings and only if she didnt return by night fall would they begin to look for her.

Slowly she raised her hands up to take hold of the hood of her cloak and move it back reveiling her facial features and hair. " will you answer my questions now ? "

Once she put the grenade down, he lifted the rifle so the barrel was pointed in the air. He was quiet for a moment as he took in her newly revealed features. She was beautiful, even though her hair seemed to be unnatural, well something he wasn't used to seeing. He cleared his throat for a moment before speaking.

"I don't know what you mean by magi. I am just a soldier and a scout. I.."

He was cut off for a moment by the sound of a twig snapping behind him. He frowned as he turned to see what the noise was, lowering his rifle. Stepping out of the forest a few feet away were three of the ugliest creatures he had seen. The two in front were goblins dressed in piece meal leather outfits, armed with shortswords. Behind those two was a tall ogre armed with a club.

Noticing they had been spotted, they roared and raised their weapons as they charged to close the distance. He really didn't have time to aim, so Jared snapped off three quick shots at the three creatures. There was no noise, but the air between the barrel of the weapon and his targets rippled visibly, like a visible heat wave. The first shot caught first goblin in the chest, a hole appearing clean through him. The ogre was minus a head while the second goblin lost his arm at his left shoulder.

The goblin with the hole in the chest continued forward for a few seconds before falling face first a few feet from Jared. The ogre fell forward where he was, blood spewing forth from the stump. The second goblin screamed in pain before clutching at his stump of a shoulder and running back into the woods.

Jared blinked for a moment before lowering his rifle.

"Strange looking humans."

Shrandiria upon hearing the twig break and seeing the three emerge swiftly took aim after drawing an arrow from the quiver at her back, and froze for only a split second as the males attacks registered. Then fired hitting the goblin who had begun running away in the back of the head where the skull connected to the neck.

The momentum of the shot lifting him off his feet. severing the head partially from the body a few inches in the air before it fell, and slid a few feet across the ground. She blinked her grass green colored eyes a moment as she drew another arrow and aimed at the one who called himself a soldjer, and scout.

She knew what thos titles were but his wepons were extreamly powerful indeed, all of who and what he was... so strange. He didnt know what a magi was.. a mage.. who was he where did he hail from.

If he were aiming at her she would fire if not she would lower her bow and attempt to talk with him some more. His wepons however frightened her. " They were not human.." was all she said.

He watched the arrow fly past him, taking down the third. It did occur to him that if one was loosed, than another was probably already in place to follow after the first, into him. After all, he did turn his back to her.

"Not humans, huh?"

He lowered the muzzle down towards the ground, leaving one hand on the hilt. He lifted his other hand up as he turned around slowly to face her. He could kill her or severely injured her from the close range, but she did help him, in a way. It was the start of something, at least.

He gave a little grin for a moment as he faced her fully.

"Easy now. I'm not going to shoot you. I did come to harm anyone unless they were a threat to me. Please, put it down."

Slowly she lowered her wepon the arrow pointed down bow string untaunt, however the arrow stayed notched just incase." you are strange, but you did not fire upon me.. i will trust you speak truly.. do not fail me" She said her green gaze not leaving his.

"Why have you come? what is it you seek?" she wanted to know. " From wince do you hail ?" it was about mid day now. Still plenty of time to determin wether or not to lead him to the village or leave him behind covering her tracks if necessary.

He wasn't completely sure what she meant by not failing her, as he didn't even know her. He pushed the thought aside for the time being, taking things a step further. He was on his guard, but shifted the rifle so it was re-slung on his back.

"You certainly ask a lot of questions. Then I don't blame you."

He thought for a moment on how to best answer her questions without giving too much away.

"I come from a place far away, though I doubt you've heard of it. A place called New York. And as I said before, I'm just seeking supplies and resources."

He walked over to the corpse of the closet goblin, nudging it with a boot. He leaned down and flipped the goblin onto it's back so he could study it some more.

she watched him closely her head tilted a bit to the side she looked puzzled new..york? no she had never heard of it. Did it lay across the sea?, and how many more would come? She watched him turn away and inspect the goblins corps.

she put the arrow back in her quiver and sholdered her bow much as he had his wepon and moved closer but did not move with in reach of being grabed. " Why have you need of our supplys? dose this New York have no resorces ? you would steel food from other places? "

She hoped he wasnt a theif and had perhaps come to barter for the things he was looking for if not they were going to have to fight shed hate to have to kill such an interesting male.

He didn't speak for a few moments as he continued to inspect the goblin. He picked up the short sword for a moment, hefting it up. A few thoughts were going through his mind this was not where he was supposed to have ended up.

The reports had mentioned dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures. There were no mention of these non-humans, armed with weapons. And no sign of the probe seemed to confirm it.

"Right now, the only thing that matters is that I believe I am stuck. No way to get home."

He glanced towards her for a moment before dropping the sword and dusting his hands off.

how are you stuck you have that monstrous beast? the noisy one..? can you not take it the way you came ?" She asked. if he were truly alone she could perhaps take him to the village and ask the elders to allow him to stay.

His magics and abilitys could come in handy but they would have to go soon. It was a long hike back. " i cannot promise you saftey and shelter if you come with me. For i have no control over elder decisions. if you wish i will take you to our village. i think you could be a great help, you have much here we do not know or understand.. but if you teach.. then you have much to trade and barter with. "

Sharandria awaited his answer quietly. if he decided not to come with her that was fine it was his choice but it would mean facing such as orcs and other things on his own unless she visited, which she would he would also need a better place to camp and defend.

There were few places truly that fit that discription, but it was possable for him to remain on his own.. " can you use a bow and arrows? " she asked wondering if his magic ability ran out if he could defend himself in other ways. a "sword ?"

He tried to think for a moment what she had meant by noisy beast. The quad was silent, and the only thing he could think of was she had heard the opening and closing of the portal. He shook his head softly for a moment.

"No, that noisy beast you speak of was the portal machine used to get me here. Unfortunately I have no means of communicating with the base, since the portal is shut."

He looked to her for a moment when she talked of him going back to the village with her. It was a thought, as he really didn't know the area very well. He figured he could survive for a bit on his own, but his food supplies were only enough to last a couple of weeks.

"Sure, I'll come to see your village. Might as well find a way to settle in for the long haul."

He went back to the quad, and hooked it up to the trailer before folding up the netting and relocking everything in the trailer. He patted the back of the quad for a moment.

"I can give you a lift, though it will be a bit snug. Just guide me where to go."

Her eyes widened as she shook her head. " no i shall guide but not ride." Sharandria had watched him pack things up swiftly and efficently some what impressed. She wasnt sure what kind of welcome they might recive if he came into the village as he was but if they stopped just within sight of it and he walked in with her he might appear less of a threat.

" you cannot come fully into the village with everything until youve shown you mean no harm, well stop just outside of it. Then walk in as i will be with you hopefully you will have safe passage. "

Turning she raised the hood of her cloak to hide her features once more and Darted off in the direction of the village. The forest was thick in sevral places and she had to stop and find alternate routes that his Quad could take which made the journy all the longer.

When they were with in a few miles of the village others rangers and guards surrounded them from the trees keeping an eye on them but not attacking. They couldnt see the village yet but Shrandira knew they were close enough, she raised a hand to hault his approch. " from here we walk.."

she waited for him to move.. slowly three out of the dozen that were around them approched speaking heatdly to Shrandria in elven.. who in turn spoke heatedly if explanitorily back also in elven.

All eyes turned from her to him then back, one male obviously a guard rather than a ranger motioned them forward the rangers falling instep behind them keeping the strange male and her between them as they were escorted to the elders.

He was a little disappointed she didn't want to ride, but he didn't say anything about it. He nodded when she told him what her plan was.

"That's fine, I can deal with it."

He easily kept pace with her, deftly driving through the forest. There was a couple of times when the trailer just fit through where she had guided, but he didn't mind. He took in the scenery as they went, finding it a nice change from the polluted world he had left. He was partly glad he was stranded here, currently.

When she signaled for him to stop, he pulled the quad and trailer over into a little niche out of the way. He climbed off and walked after her, stopping when the other elven guards stepped out.

His hand twitched for a moment, wanting to draw his pistol, but he knew better. He didn't say anything as they began walking towards the villages. He knew he didn't have a chance, even if he probably could take a few down first. However he was here in peace for the time being.

They were escorted to Sharandrias own quarters and left there a guard standing outside the door. As they had come through the village many stopped what they were doing to stair at the stranger or pull there children inside.

Her home was a simple one but for being what to him would be a very elaborate tree house the bottom of the tree trunk being the door and the inside being the stairs leading up to the actual home was interesting and ornaite only in the leave like patterns and designs carved into the wood.

once alone Sharandria lowered her hood. " please make yourself comfortable i must leave you for a bit to speak with the elders and explain before you are called to do so as well. "

He looked around carefully as he walked through the village, taking note of all he could. He did noticed the suspicion on the villagers as they went inside their houses, but that was only natural.

He took a moment to look at the outside of Sharandria's house before going inside. He gave a smile and nodded at her offer of making himself comfortable.

"Thank you. Oh, I didn't catch your name. I'm Jared."

He held a hand out towards her for a moment for a handshake, though he didn't know if that was their custom.

She looked at his hand a bit confused not sure what to do with it and held hers out in a like manor but not taking his she smiled then lowered her hand. Bowing politely she said " i must go"

Leaving her home she was escorted to the Elders questioned lectured and yelled at for hours, in which she debated and argued back respectfully. in the end it was decided he would be allowed to stay but only temporarily while they observed him.

Shrandria was not allowed to leave the village again for a few months as punishment for bringing a stranger to them with out consulting them first. She accepted this for it could have been much worse. The male was also to be her resoponsablity while he was with them.

They sent for the male and waited for him to be escorted to them.

Jared blinked for a moment she held her hand out, but didn't introduce herself. He gave a little smile when she bowed to him and then was gone. While she was gone, he took his time to explore her house.

It didn't take him long to look around her house, so he occupied his time waiting on her with cleaning his weapons. He really wanted to go and bring his things in, but he couldn't leave with the guard there.

When they came for him, he decided to leave his firearms at her place. The only weapon he carried was a foot long combat knife attached to his hip. He followed after his escort, quietly and carefully.
