World Community Grid. You donate spare computer time to the grid and it is used to calculate solutions to problems like finding treatments for HIV or cancer, to find more nutritious rice for third world countries - that kind of thing. The software runs in the background. You can run it as a screen saver or dedicate more resources to the computing. You can tell it to run only when you aren't using the computer, or to use a certain portion of your computer resources. It is up to you.

I think it is a great thing, but I will not use it. I haven´t used any kind of program like that after back in the day with the S.E.T.I screensaver, but I think it is a marvellous thing none the less.

1. What, exactly, is the computing power used for? Yes, I know that there are projects listed, but when my PS3 is working for Folding@Home, I can see what it is actually doing.

2. I try to have my computers sleep as much as possible. Can you convince me that the energy that I would be using for this project will somehow be used beneficially?
