There has been much speculation recently about what would move The American Taliban, Johnny Walker, to abandon everything and stick his head in the desert sands of Islamic fundamentalism. His father, Frank Lindh, has said that it was the boy’s reading of the Autobiography of Malcolm X at age 16 that began his infatuation with the teachings of Muhammad. Well, San Francisco Examiner columnist P. J. Corkery has a different theory. Corkery reports that around the same time that precious little Johnny started messing around with Islam daddy Lindh was messing around with … another man.

Lindh apparently left the family to live with his male lover (not that there’s anything wrong with that). P. J. writes, "Sources close to the family say the father's turn of life from married man to modern gay man startled and flustered the 16-year-old." I’m no theology expert, but I imagine that like most other fundamentalist religions, Islamic fundamentalism teaches that homosexuality is wrong and a sin against God/Allah. Now add to that the fact that when captured, Johnny gave his name as Walker (his mother’s maiden name), not Lindh (the name he grew up with). This is no excuse for Jihad Johnny’s actions, but it will be interesting to see how this bit of information plays out in the weeks ahead.

I guess we’ll read all about it in Johnny Taliban’s best-selling book.
