Anyone have any thoughts on Mr. Cash's cover of Hurt? Frankly, I like them both and thought Mr Cash definately put a lot of his inner feelings into his rendition of the song. And the video, pretty somber.

Cash has done a number oc covers in the last 5 years. Almost without exception they have been a worthy new take ona song and uniquely Cash. Even his cover of 'Personal Jesus' was great, free of the irony that might have overcome it.

... and lets face it, Cash covering your song is a significant compliment.

Definately agree.

I can imagine some of my younger (or older) more die-hard, ReznorIsGod, NIN fans (which I'm not) scream bloody murder about he took a great Industrial song and turned it into country.

I love music, and am mostly borderless.

I just saw the video and heard the song for the first time the other day. I didn't know that it was a cover at the time. I found the song and the video 'bittersweet' for me. Growing up my father was (and still is) a die hard Johnny Cash fan. I used to cringe every time that he played his music louder than mine but now I can appreciate the music he made. Seeing him today and remembering him as part of my childhood jolted me a bit. I'm not sure now how to explain but it's always difficult when anything from our childhood ages or moves on.

I gave my father a copy of his new CD for Christmas ...... I think I need to get myself a copy now.

Amazing... I just downloaded many of the Johnny Cash covers over the weekend. His version of Hurt is fantastic. Two that really surprised and impressed me were Solitary Man and First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.

If you really want an impressive Johnny Cash tune listen to Delia's Gone - they man has made a career out of songs about killing women he loves, lol.

Agreed. Cash has brought great new life to a lot of these songs, mainly because he recognized that their true strengths were in the words and they should be presented simply as opposed to big busy production numbers.

My favourite is still probably his version of U2's "One"

It would have to be nearly the best cover I ever heard. I never really got the song till I heard Johnny Cash do it.

Ya know, I think Cash pretty much transcends definition especially with what he's been doing over the past 10 years. I'll be the first to tell you I fucking hate country music. I grew up surrounded by fucking Yee-HA rednecks and the moment I hear a twang I get violently ill. But for me Cash gets beyond that, and I was really pleased to find this selection of music.

It's good stuff people, check it out.

When I think of what type of person would make up the "typical" American, I always think of Johnny Cash. His music crosses over so many boundaries and his songwriting skills are unequaled. If you ask recording artists who they respect and who made them want to get into the business, across the board from country to rock, they all agree that Cash is it. I can only echo the statement that having Cash do a cover is a huge honor. Here's to hoping for many more years for the "Man in Black"

Haven't heard this
Guess I need to head for Bearshare & look
Cash's cover of "13" is one of my all-time faves tho
I liek the genre mixing he does :D

I agree his music transcends borders. Looks like I have to go album shopping now. :)

My hub loves Cash and the Highwaymen and I think he got a bit misty eyed watching the video.

I met Johnny Cash once - he is a little scary in person. I've seen him play in big auditoriums and small night clubs - he's an incredible singer/performer. I do love his music. Looks like I'll be joining the shopping crowd and going out to look for another new CD.

Yeah the screaming was pretty loud when NIN toured with David Bowie...but that served to show what an ignorant lot they truely were.

However, I was in Austin and that show kicked ass..

Johnny Cash has an amazing ability to trancend his genre. I think modern country music is missing a great deal by *not* playing his current work. Johnny Cash is about the only country artist whose work I really enjoy.
