I think I heard it on the news that they got shaved (sounds a bit ambiguous, eh?). There are few obvious reasons for that, I believe:
1) medical reasons (head lice, hiding sharp objects in their body hair)
2) uniformity
3) taking away in what they believe in, as the long beard was compulsory for any Afghan male (i.e. a sort of Taliban trademark)
