Wouldn't it been simpler to put a bullet through his worthless skull?

Simpler? Yes.
Constitutional? Doubtful.

I really don't want to live in a country where we forgo rights and due process in favor of putting bullets through people's heads because it's 'simpler.'

My stomach aches

Why do we even acknowledge him? To call him an American? He ceased being an American, way before 9/11. His philosophy is the antithesis of America. Why waste the time, money, or energy on this individual. Treat him as if he were any other Taliban prisoner, no different. Don't make him a martyr. Revoke any right he has to citizenship, and let him live the rest of his life out with those whom he has chosen to bed with.

He's a confused kid. Who cares if he is older than most of the Marines. His parents are rich liberals. Our kind of people.

Umhh just a little hint guys don't piss Never off she can take all of you typing with her toes.

Okay, normally I'm against the death penalty, namely on the grounds that so many innocents get killed because of it...

However, when it comes to John Taliban Walker..

Hang the fucker high.

The only reason for the attention

If he was a po'black child from the inner city- the media would have left the story to die a long time ago.

Why do you think The Levy case went on so long- white parents ranting, a lust crazed married senator and a missing white girl- nothing makes better "news" then that.

All we cared to hear was Condit himself saying- to the viewers- is "I did it, I screwed her, I killed her......." Connie Chung is our fearless interrigator *yeah*

I could rant all day about the media, a load of crap most of the time, all to sell ads....so they have to give us "news" (read scandelous stories), not what is really important. At thins point in my life, I don't even know what is "important" anymore.....

What is news?

Ahhhh, ranting.....*headspinning*

Better off reading The Onion, now that is news!!!

No, he is still legally an American.
You can't take away his rights as an American citizen by saying, 'I divorce you, I divorce you, I divorce you.'

"His philosophy is the antithesis of America."
Not so. America has defined itself as a nation of diverse philosophies and beliefs. No one philosophy can be said to be the antithesis of American philosophy, not even the belief that people must believe and act in one way.

"Why waste the time, money, or energy on this individual?"
This is, In My Humble Opinion, a great question.

"Treat him as if he were any other Taliban prisoner, no different. Don't make him a martyr. Revoke any right he has to citizenship, and let him live the rest of his life out with those whom he has chosen to bed with."
I doubt very much his citizenship will be taken from him. If we did that I believe he would fall out of the realm of the American justice system.

Alright, normally I'll be the first to criticize the media, but I think you've got it all wrong in this case man. This isn't about a nice little white kid winding up in the middle east. This is about an american who betrayed his own country. Doesn't matter if he's white, black, hispanic, asian.. He's a traitor, we haven't had a real honest-to-god traitor in a while.

I warned you now and you did not listen. Bow down before the all powerful never.

Zowie!!!!

I agree with you Never, our country is founded on diversity. This is one individual, there are many other trying matters at hand. Is he a threat to us, probably not.

Did he think that 9/11 would happen? Doubt it.

I do think he tripped a bit far, too far to come back home? Yes.

There are many more monsters (and I doubt Walker is a Monster), that deserve swift and just punishment........

The media focuses on these trivial issues, clouding the 'big picture", if there is one.

The media is an opiate for the masses. I am not one to say I am privy to other things, but the media's motivation for focusing on sensational stories is financially driven. The news that they bring us for the most part has no effect on my life, or yours- so is it news?

we haven't had a real honest-to-god traitor in a while.

I guess we need one! Nothing like the mass energy of a lynch mob, running free!

That's so sweet - I think.

I would never become 'pissed' with someone who put time and thought into expressing their political views. Being open to other's viewpoints and creating a dialogue is much more important to me than convincing the other side that I am 'right' and they are 'wrong'.

If someone else decides to start taking pot shots I'm much more likely to ignore them than engage them.

lavender, on the other hand, is excellent at trying to rip people's tongues out of their head and beat them with it. On political threads at least.

Thats not really what i meant convincing them that you are right and they are wrong. I like the way you go through and pick apart a persons argument. You never really get caustic or mean just point out all their flaws and what is missing from what they say.

I like it very much. I think it is kind of sexy too, but I am weird.

Yes yes i remember you are a lesbian, but you are so damn inteligent and i find inteligence sexy.

Ah yes but of course...

Let us just kill him outright, and totally forget that we are a nation of laws and due process.

Let us just kill him outright and take out our collective anger at Bin Laden out on this stupid man

Let us just kill him outright, just as the Taliban and Al Quadea would for saying or thinking differently. How enlightened we have become!!!

Let us go back to the days when the King could have us killed without even knowing why.

Damn we are a bloodthirsty group!!!

The man is small peanuts as far as it goes,a trial is called for.

Pathetic.

I would hope

that before the government even brings charges against him and spends money to prosecute Walker that they will give him a psychiatric examination. Mental illnesses effect judgement, and joining the Taliban is about the worst judgement I can think of. He may also be delusional. Let's find out first. And if his behavior was due to mental illness I would not bring any charges against him.

He was a mercenary. Whether paid in silver or the promise of paradise, it does not matter. Being a merc is not a crime. There is nothing he can be tried for. Ask a lawyer.

On the other hand, we could quietly tell the Afghanies that we would not fight extradition (he's on one of our ships) and they could try him for whatever...

Isn't that usually the fate of mercs who fight on the loosing side?

Treason

I find myself agreeing with Sin on this one.

He went to Afghanistan and joined the Taliban because he believed in what they were doing, regardless of how antiquated and extreme it is. The Taliban were not exactly "friends" of the US before September 11 but that didn't make them our enemies either. Our dispute with the Taliban is based solely on their refusing to hand over Bin Laden and that was the decision of the Taliban leader Omar. I am quite sure you could find many Taliban soldiers that would have handed over Bin Laden in a heartbeat if it could have prevented what we did to them. I don't think the new Afghani government is going to prosecute the entire Taliban organization, just the leaders. Technically we could have tried and executed every confederate soldier at the end of our Civil War. They took up arms against the United States and killed United States soldiers. That is treason isn't it?

There is no proof that once the war started that John Walker fired upon or engaged United States servicemen in combat. Granted also, there is no proof that he didn't, but reasonable doubt and all that makes it necesary to prove he did, not for him to prove he didn't. Indeed much of the takeover of Mazar-i-Sharif was done with Northern Alliance troops. Is it treason for him to fight them? (I don't mean that facetiously, I am truly asking for clarification on this point)

It is entirely possible that he was simply caught between a rock and a hard place after 9-11. He had no way of knowing what would transpire when he went over there. It is possible he may have just been holed up trying to avoid the bombs just as a lot of the other Taliban were. Remember, the Al-Qeada (Arabs) were killing any Taliban that tried to surrender so that wasn't much of an option especially him being an American.

This bloodlust in the name of patriotism is disturbing. No proof of anything yet and so many are wanting to kill him.

I suppose I am unpatriotic for suggesting we wait until the evidence is in and the truth is known before passing judgement.

That was I...

up there.

The terrorist.

*hey Sin...it's "losing" not "loosing"*

Sorry..it grates on me when I see that;) I can't help but read it as looSing (as in letting loose) instead of looZing.

Fuck...now I will see it all the time:D

I'm not sure if i should comment on this thread
as i'm not american and i'ts less of an emotive
issue for me,but i found this very interesting.
Four british citizens fighting with the taliban
were killed during the fighting, admittedly they
were pakistani in origin but still lived in the
u.k and held u.k passports.The general opinion
over here has been good bloody riddance.Though i
don't generally agree with the death sentance
(britain scrapped this over 30 years ago)we now
have laws where we cannot send anyone to a
country where he could be executed for the crime
of which he is accused. If Bin Laden himself
turned up in London and said "here i am" theres
not a damn thing we could do as he's committed
no known crime in Britain and we couldn't send
him to the usa.

As Charles Dickens wrote in the Pickwick Papers
"IF THAT IS WHAT THE LAW SAYS THEN THE LAW IS AN ASS"

Not sure

of the legal parameters.

Could he be tried in Britain for the deaths of the British ctizens in the WTC?

Not sure on this either i can't recall any case of someone being prosecuted inside the uk for a crime committed outside of our borders.I know other countries have this law but i don't think we do.

But if anyone knows different i'd be interested to hear.

Had another thought we could probably send him to the un tribunal because they don't have the death penalty.
