He was Winston Smith in 1984 (always worth watching, and now more than ever). That was Richard Burton's last movie, and Hurt looked closer to death in it than Burton did.


Between I Claudius, Alien, and The Elephant Man, he really cornered the market on great death scenes for a few years there.
