Before his administration even began, President Biden was boasting that he could reopen a majority of schools within the first 100 days of his tenure. But less than a week into the job, Biden has decided to side with teachers unions that are refusing to return to work. This poses a grave danger to children.

At the same time, school closures have devastated parents and students. Parents are finding it nearly impossible to juggle full-time jobs while keeping up with distance learning, especially for children in younger grades, where attention spans are low and social-emotional development is even more important than academics. Students, meanwhile, have been earning Fs at an alarming rate, and the term “digital dropout” has been added to the education lexicon to describe students who simply do not show up for virtual school.

This is completely unacceptable. Last May, we warned that if schools did not find a way to reopen by last September, arguments would proliferate ad infinitum for delaying reopening, with references to vague and constantly shifting definitions of safety. The original rationale for closing schools was the early assumption, which proved wrong, that schools would exacerbate the spread of COVID-19 and lead to the collapse of hospital systems. Now, we’ve reached the point where every teacher receiving a vaccine that is 95% effective is said to be not enough.

As teachers unions display reckless disregard for the well-being of children, it’s enraging that Biden is too afraid to stand up to them. Don't go with the flow, Joe. Take a lead for the nation's children.

When the White House can't handle the truth

There it was: The head of the CDC frankly stating that the science shows schools can safely reopen, and that the reopening of the schools does not depend on vaccinating teachers. Given the current debate, in which teachers unions, the longtime allies and benefactors of Democratic politicians from Joe Biden on down, are demanding that schools remain closed and that teachers be vaccinated before any reopening can occur, Walensky's statement was big news. Would Democratic officeholders listen to the science and break with the unions?

It was such big news that the White House immediately ran away from it. At Thursday's briefing, a reporter asked press secretary Psaki, "Yesterday the head of the CDC, as you know, said that it was safe to reopen schools without vaccinating teachers. You said that the White House was still waiting to -- waiting for the official guidance before making a final determination. Why isn't what the director of the CDC says -- why isn't that enough?”

Psaki said there was a CDC guidance process going on that hadn't been completed. And she said that the president wants schools to reopen. And he wants to rely on medical experts in making decisions. And then she came to Dr. Walensky: "So we're just not -- she -- the -- Dr. Walensky spoke in her personal capacity. Obviously, she's the head of the CDC, but we're going to wait for the final guidance come out so we can use that as a guide for schools around the country."

Now, the White House can say to the teachers unions: Don't worry. Dr. Walensky didn't really mean it. She was just speaking for herself. We're not going to cross you and announce that schools should open. You're still in charge. And as for Psaki's pledge to bring "truth and transparency" back to the briefing room? Well, perhaps she was just speaking in her personal capacity.

Two decades of educational gains were wiped out in two years, new test scores in math and reading show. The drop was greatest among black students.

The people who nonetheless closed the schools bear full blame for the lasting harm they have done to children. All of them should lose their jobs.

The math decline was almost three times as great for black students as for white students. Hispanic students were in the middle. This is totally unsurprising, as black students were far more likely to be stuck in remote learning by uncaring bureaucrats and administrators and lazy teachers unions. In November 2020, 70% of black students and 60% of Hispanic students were remote, compared to 40% of white students, surveys found.

Sometimes, it’s hard to believe that people in charge would knowingly harm children for no good reason. But looking now, as the predictable harms of the school closures become evident, we must assign blame to the school boards, county officials, and state officials who did this to our children, in addition to the media figures, public health officials, and union bosses who lobbied for this.

Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, is attempting to deflect blame for promoting school closures that crippled American students’ educations.

After being called out by the Wall Street Journal editorial board in a piece titled “Randi Weingarten Flunks the Pandemic,” the teachers’ union boss wrote a letter to the editor placing blame on former President Donald Trump, former Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos, and Republicans, while lauding President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan.

The Journal‘s scathing editorial came after new education statistics were released by the federal government showing that school closures caused the worst learning loss in 30 years.

"She and her union were the chief disrupters,” the piece continued, saying Weingarten was responsible for “set[ting] back America’s children for years.”

The Seattle Education Association shut down public schools for the first day of classes just one week after the U.S. Department of Education announced the worst learning loss seen in the United States in 30 years.

After a vote in which 95 percent of unionized teachers chose to strike, Seattle Public Schools was forced to close its doors until the teachers’ union is ready to send teachers back to work.

While they argue they support students, teacher strikes typically end up harming students in the process of negotiations with the school district. Seattle Public Schools is the largest school district in Washington state.

As Breitbart News reported, President Joe Biden’s Department of Education admitted that the primary reason for the learning loss was keeping children out of classrooms.
