jobs that don't require writing

A good friend of mine regularly climbs 100-200 foot antenna masts. 1700 ft is crazy.

It gave me a third degree pucker just watching it!

And that is just plain nuts.

I have done a lot of rock and Ice climbing but I put in a hell of a lot more safeties than that guy did.

Jeezus! Just watching that dude scamper up those cleats gave me the willies. I'd take a beating rather than climb up there. I'd have heart failure anyway, so what the hell.

I used to know a chap who worked as a quality inspector for a company that built electricity pylons. As the construction crew finished each section, Charlie had to clamber up and make sure that everything was up to scratch.

I can’t remember exactly how the numbers worked, but if the inspectors had to go above, say, 300 feet, they got an extra payment. And if they had to go over, say, 500 feet, they got an extra extra payment.

Apparently, a lot of the inspectors didn’t like doing the really high towers. But Charlie became something of a high tower specialist. As he used to say, ‘Sam, if you fall from 299 feet, and your harness gives out, you’re going to be dead. And, if you fall from 301 feet, and your harness gives out, you’re not going to be any deader.’

I guess the same applies from 1,700 feet.

No. Freakin'. Way.

I need to lay down.

I wanted him to be done long before he was. :(

Interesting though. But he can keep his job. I'll just cut hair. It's a lot safer. :p

I had a job where I had to climb vertical ladders of 100 feet. Getting up there is only half job; coming down is when your arms and legs start to give out. Scary, but it payed good money. That guy climbing 1700 feet must really eat his spinach and his Wheaties.

Gah. I've got the fear clawing at my gonads even in a video.

No way am I ever doing that.

That's an amazing video clip. Thanks for posting it. It scared the bejeezus out of me, though. By the time it was over I had to lie down on the floor and hang on tight.

You mean you guys actually watched it all the way through? Ha! And you say you've got a fear of heights!

I saw him climbing that ladder and I cut it off real quick. No friggin' way I was going up there with him. I get nervous glancing over the side of my one-story balcony!

How did they build that thing?

They obviously couldn't have used a crane. So the whole top assembly had to be bolted together by guys working up there, right? hauling the pieces up on ropes?

Or did they assemble it in space and then drop it into place?

Woah, that was intense. I'm not afraid of heights, but, jeez, that takes some guts to climb that high.

Uhh yeah. I'm coining the term vicarious acrophobia. Was sittin' real low in my seat to get through that. Thanks for sharing.

Hiring Manager: "Have I got a job for you! They pay you to get high!"
Druggie Boy: "Hell yes, I'll take it!"

(Moral: ALWAYS read the fine print.)

I don't mind heights.

Funny thind is, once the guy was at the top, the only thing I thought about was;
What freaking cool place for a BASE jump!

I wondered about that. If he couldn't use a safety line, why didn't he strap on a 'chute once he was outside the tower? I mean, if he was hauling up all those tools in a bag, why not include a parachute, as well?

maybe hauling another 20 pounds of gear isn't so hot, and, you gotta get clear of the structure before you can pop the 'chute.

It is a guided tower. They assemble it on the ground and then erect it with the guy wires.
