from The New York Post:

ARMED JEWS TO PATROL B'KLYN

By ED ROBINSON
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

June 10, 2002 -- Would-be vigilante residents, armed with guns and bats, will patrol Jewish neighborhoods in Brooklyn, after a terror suspect said the areas were once targeted for attack, a right-wing rabbi said last night.
Rabbi Yakove Lloyd, founder and president of the ultra-conservative Jewish Defense Group, said patrols will begin in Borough Park and Flatbush on June 16 in response to comments Abdul Rahman Yasin made on CBS's "60 Minutes" last week.

During the interview, Yasin said he and his accomplices originally had planned to attack heavily Jewish neighborhoods in Brooklyn before deciding to bomb the World Trade Center in 1993.

Six people were killed and more than 1,000 were injured in that bombing.

Lloyd told The Post that the street patrols would include at least 50 members of his organization who've signed up to patrol since the interview.

Some of them who are licensed to carry firearms will do so, he said.

Others will carry unloaded shotguns in bags, Lloyd said.

A Police Department spokeswoman said it is illegal to carry an exposed gun on city streets.

Some in the vigilante group also will be wielding bats, pipes, cell phones and walkie-talkies.

"We will do nothing illegal," Lloyd said.

The patrols will be in force daily from 9 p.m. until 3 a.m.

During the Jewish Sabbath, from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday, non-Orthodox Jews will patrol, Lloyd said.

The patrols "will act as a tremendous deterrent," Lloyd said.

"Once the terrorists know we are there, they'll think twice before striking."

The Jewish Defense Group, founded by Lloyd in Queens in 1985, follows the principles of the late Rabbi Meir Kahane, founder of the Jewish Defense League.

Lloyd said he expected resistance from the community and had not yet contacted the NYPD about the plan, but planned to do so.

He criticized the NYPD for not patrolling the areas enough itself.

NYPD spokeswoman Valerie St. Rose said, "We'll monitor the [citizen patrols], and if there needs to be police action taken [against them], it will be taken."

Some community leaders were angered by the proposed patrols.

"You can't have civilian armed patrols in New York," said Williamsburg activist Isaac Abraham.

"The Jewish community in Williamsburg won't allow it, and I hope other communities will follow suit."

The larger question: "How long before the Law and Order episode airs?"

Everyone likes to walk around with a gun in their pocket...

...but what strikes me as questionable about this plan is how people wandering the streets with bats and shotguns will stop terrorists from planting truck bombs in the neighborhood. This group would also appear to have a severely limited air defense capability.

Isn't this sort of group called a "Gang" when young black and Puerto Rican men form them in more or less the same area? I'm afraid the city/borough will have to treat them as if they are.

a small but crucial bit of info

from the guardian:

In January, JDL chairman Irv Rubin and a group member were charged with conspiring to blow up a mosque and the office of an Arab-American congressman in California. Rubin and his co-defendant, Earl Krugel, pleaded innocent and are scheduled to go on trial Oct. 1.
