I had met Jenny in college when I was 19 years old. We had been roommates for two years and during my college days we were the best of friends and then the worst of enemies. It was a complete surprise, when I got a call from her on my 29th birthday. Somehow she had heard I was in a difficult marriage and wanted to restore our friendship after parting on awful terms.
Jenny's call was short, friendly, mysterious and completely out of the blue. She explained that she was in town at a convention. Wanted to take me horseback riding in the nearby countryside at a friend's place and then to help me celebrate with an overnight stay at the farm's guest house.
Of course, I badly wanted to restore our friendship. As the years from college passed, I had slowly accepted a lot of the blame, rightly or wrongly, for the end of friendship. Somehow, her boyfriend dumping her after a frat party and then hooking up with me a few months later had been the dynamite that had destroyed our friendship.
My relationship with Tony had only lasted one semester but my friendship with Jenny was being repair. Many weird things had happened to that made me suspect that Jenny was taking her revenge on me. During the last few semesters, too many crank calls, my locker was broken into several times, my books were stolen (notes included), someone had changes my course schedule, I had clothes stolen from my dorm and at one point my tires were slashed. I could never prove Jenny was behind it but I sure suspected it.
Old feelings flooded back into my mind. Somehow I wanted to fix things and have a long talk with Jenny. There would be closure at last. I went to bed that night happy with the celebration of my birthday with my husband and children and a little nervous that I would be meeting Jenny the next day at a farm called "The Black Sheep".
The next day flew by. The morning routine saw the kids off to school with lunches and packs and then my husband made it out as well. In the morning I cleaned the house - dusting, laundry, dishes, vacuuming and even windows. The afternoon I even did some weeding and gardening to make the time pass faster. In the mid-afternoon, I decided it was time to get ready to drive out to "The Black Sheep" for horseback riding and a night over at the guest house.
It took two hours to get ready! I showered, washed carefully, applied a light lemon scent, put on some make-up and then carefully picked my clothes. I left the left the house, in a pair of designer blue jeans, a blue denim blouse, and a black cowgirl hat. On my feet I had find my old pair of pink cowboy boots that still fit - though they seemed a whole lot tighter than I remembered. My natural boring brown hair was still a frosted blonde shade that would certainly catch Jenny off guard.
My last check in the mirror reassured my confidence. I wanted to look my best for meeting Jenny. Was it vanity or did I want to prove to Jenny that I had it together? Maybe it was a deep need to show Jenny that Tony had been attracted to me.
"I'll just relax... I'll be myself... I'll enjoy the horseback riding... We'll have some country cooking... and then probably share a six pack in the barn..... like we used to in college on those fun long weekends"
The drive to "The Black Sheep" wasn't a short drive like Jenny had led me to believe. It was actually a two hour drive and I only arrived around six p.m. and was welcomed by a few cowboys as I pulled and directed to the main kitchen.
As I walked in the room, a woman's voice screeched out "Paula!!!!!! It's really you!... You look fabulous!"
I did a double take as the woman rushing to wards me to hug me must have been Jenny. But this Jenny was not the same 110 lb college tease that set a lot of boys on fire with her tricks and bad attitude. This woman had dull short black hair, looked short, dumpy and hadn't aged well at all. She was dressed in work jeans and a flannel shirt.
"Oh.... Hi Jenny" I screeched back as I ran to hug her.
"You look great too!" I lied.
"The food is all ready... Do you remember that beef stew old Ms. Hubbard used to make at the Birch Tree Farm. Well the cook has made it special for us. Please have a seat ... I'll make the introductions...." Jenny explained as she guided me to a chair between a pair of husky cowboys.
The introductions were polite and thereafter I ignored the two cowboys who were seated with us. I wasn't trying to be mean or rude, but I just wasn't interested in them and I was anxious to talk to Jenny.
The food was great and we washed it down with a pair of beers each and we quickly swapped information on marriages and children. Sure enough, Jenny had been married and divorced twice, once to a biker and once to a minister. She had four kids and was between jobs waitressing and massage parlor work. I had explained that William and I had been married for seven years and had two children - Steve who was six and Andrew who was four.
As we finished up some chocolate cherry cheese cake, Jenny monopolized the conversation. She got into how shitty her life had become and how wonderful everything seemed for me. I could a little envy in her voice and self loathing. My efforts to interrupt her were unsuccessful and I was relieved when the cowboys left to saddle up our horses.
I guess they were supposed to guide us, but when Jenny told them we were both riders and gave them each an extra twenty dollars as a tip, they were happy to let us ride off together. It was around seven thirty as we headed east with the intention of heading back before sunset.
As we rode our mounts, we both became giddy and childish. We trotted about like children exploring the trails and then racing each other through the fields. I could sense Jenny was pushing me and sure enough she was always ahead of me. It bugged me and no matter how hard I pushed the black mare her horse seemed to have a little more zip.
Jenny stopped by a pond, descended from her mount and pulled out a bottle of Jack Daniels from her jean jacket.
"A toast to the birthday girl!" she announced as she took a long swig as she waived me to descend and to look at the beautiful setting sun.
I dismounted the black mare and tied her reins to a nearby shrub. We walked near the pond and I tried to imitate the big swig that Jenny took. There was no way that I was going to look wimpy or let her outdo me again.
As we walked around the pond. we passed the bottle back and forth a dozen times until Jenny finished the last mouthful and both of us were giggling like naughty school girls as she tossed the empty bottle into the pristine pond.
"I hope I don't fall off the mare on the way back" I teased Jenny.
"We're just getting ready to party honey!" Jenny announced with a wicked smile on her face that suggested her old ways were creeping out the more she drank.
We trotted the horses and then had a cool down walk as we headed back to the barn. My head was spinning and I was actually relieved as we dismounted and tied off the horses.
Jenny didn't seem to be as taken by the beer and Jack Daniels as I was. Now she was probably 160 lbs and I was closer to a 100 lbs, but still she didn't seem as affected. For me, I knew my brain was racing and my body felt strange. The ride was a thrill itself though my rear end was a little sore and my body somewhat excited from the ride and the motion with the big mare.
"We'll get the boys to take care of the horses - I'll find them - You can head over to the guest house or check out the barn" suggested Jenny.
A dog barked in the background.
"Is that a dog?" I asked nervously.
"Of course it's a dog Paula" Jenny smiled.
"I'm still afraid of dogs Jenny" I confided nervously.
"I think I'll just meet you at the guest house....." I explained as I made a beeline straight to the little wood cabin.
The screen door creaked and then banged as it closed behind me. I was stunned by the state of the guest house. It was really no more than a bunkhouse with several single beds, a wood stove, a few windows, some tattered brown curtains, a painted grey floor and a few couches off to one side with a card table jammed between the couches.
"Shit!" I mumbled as I was alone. This place was more like a cheap college dorm that the guest house I had been imagining.
As I turned on the light, to get a better view, I realized there was a white fridge which I quickly opened to find it packed with beer, various liqueurs and a whole lot of munchies.
"At least we'll eat and drink well" I laughed aloud as the room shifted under my feet.
"I'll just lie on the couch till Jenny arrives" I spoke to myself. Without realizing it my eyes must have closed..... in the background the dog barked louder.......
